hi everyone!!
just joined, didn't know there was a forum specifically for R.P.'s....
i would like some info about breeding royals please??
i have three, 2 f/m + 1 m.
they have always been kept together (for about 8 yrs.) i've just put them in a new viv i've made myself (48x18x24) and i would like to breed them.
1). have they been together too long? (do they look at each other as brother and sister rather than girlfriend/boyfriend?)
2). when i seperate them, do i keep the male on his own and introduce the females or the other way around?

i have kept royals for about 15 yrs now but never really thought about/wanted to bred them until now!
they are of breeding age - female 1 is about 4ft/12yrs old, female 2 is about 3 1/2ft/10 yrs old, male is about 3ft/6 yrs old.
i know about the basics - cooling, feeding etc. just not sure if i really should now.
thanks for any info.....!!

@ blackecho....
cheers for your info (and everyone else's!!)
cooling them now is a bit rushed for me, will start in a couple of weeks. will feed them up first, give them a week or two, then start.
what temp should i be looking at when i cool them down?

Personally I would separate now. Brumate over winter and reintroduce in the spring.

@ blackecho,
cheers, cooling and seperating is not a problem, just wasn't sure how to, should i remove male and introduce him later to females or vice-versa or does it not matter?

You may find that for them to breed you will have to separate them first and cool them, before re-introducing them.

large mice oare only going to weigh around 50grams and a weaner between 40-80 grams,i think adults need to be on large rats (150grams)but that then depends on thier weight and body size, you need the prey to be between 10-15% of the snakes weight and no more than 1.5x the thickest part of the body.

yes, weight is not a prob, all three are eating well,(1 or 2 weaner/half size rats each, weekly/fortnightly.)

think the food size could be a issue too, weaners are way to small for a full grown adult and a female would have to be well fed to produce eggs.

just waiting on a email reply to the prime breeding age of royals.
snakey_75 Posted - 02/09/2009 : 16:57:08
the big f/m has laid eggs for previous owner, the problem he had was he kept the incubator up too high and boiled the eggs.

@ lee2308,
yes (well almost positive!)
had them probed by a vet.

yes, weight is not a prob, all three are eating well,(1 or 2 weaner/half size rats each, weekly/fortnightly.) like i said, have alwayys kept them together with no prob's, only seperate them during feeding. i have the new viv i made along with a 48x15x12 fish tank that i could use, just don't know if i should seperate them to breed (if i really need to at all!)
will post some pics of them soon!

hi,i think that if they have not breed yet they probably wont ever, maybe a daft question but are you sure the 2 females are female?mistakes can be made when sexing, when did you have them sex and how?

I'm the same as MissCat and don't really know enough about breeding to help. I'm surprised they have been living together for so long and haven't just bred naturally, as other than dropping the temp and reducing feeding there isn't much change in the climate necessary to breed. I think you might have the problem of when coming to breed and 'introducing' the snakes that nothing happened, as they already have been introuduced with no effect. But like MissCat said, someone will be along shortly who knows much more than me!

oh, and on the age thing MissCat mentioned, i don't think this will be an issue. By the age I assume the females are at least 1500g's and the male is at least 800g's.

mmhmm but someone was saying the other day that the older the male, the less fertile he is, i can only assume the same *may* be true for the females too, hence why i mentioned it :D

hullo and welcome :D
sorry- i dont personally know enough about breeding to answer your questions, but i am sure someone who does will be around soon :p
i wouldnt have thought they look at each other as brother and sister though as they will breed regardless of whether they are related.
it's not in most peoples opinions a good idea to co habit royals at all, so be prepared to hear the pro's and cons (okay, mostly the cons lol) however that said, it is GENERALLY accepted that it is the keepers decision, no matter what others opinions are.
back to the breeding, i suspect you may be told the age may be an issue, but i am unsure myself on this.
