Hi Everyone.
I got 2 royals (a boy and a girl) for my birthday last year. they both strike feed.
Stupidly in the last couple of months i've become really nervous of them. I think its mainly because the boy when he strikes has started aiming towards my hand rather than the mouse. anyone have any suggestions in helping me become less nervous again?? I used to be really good with them!!
I feel really stupid... but hey what can you do??

I use a hair dryer to heat the head. Hope you get your confidence back. Just remember to be confident and dont hesitate/hover your hand over them cos this will scare them...good luck. |

Hi Debbie, I use the bag in hot water method to get the food to body temperature and it seems to work fine, use tongs to handle the mouse and make sure your hands don't smell of food which also helps. As Blackecho says above perhaps it needs bigger food, as a general guide the food should weigh about 10% of the snakes body weight and be no larger than one and a half times the width of its head. Good luck with the next feed, hopefully things will calm down and you'll get your confidence back :) |

Hi.
I will try them on rats and see how it goes. what would you say is the best way to heat them. i heated a mouse with hot water (the mouse was in a sandwich bag), but i think it got too hot and burnt the snakes mouth cos she struk and promptly dropped the mouse.

Do you heat the mice before you offer them as your Royal will strike at heat as much as anything else. Giving the mouse's head a blast for a minute or so will help their aim.
Also, if they're over a year old now (as you got them last year), mice are probably a bit small for them and he might be hungry, have you tried rats?
