Hi I registered a few weeks ago but have been looking on this site for hints and tips about caring for Royals for about 3 months now. I think that it is about time that I said hello.
My partner Robert is already a member on the site and we have one female corn snake, a normal female Royal and now our new addition, a male spider royal. They are all so beautiful and such little treasures to look after. Rob will be posting a photo of our new spider when he comes out of his hide.
Anyway thats about it.

Thank you all for your kind welcome. I feel like I am settling in a bit now (just like our pythons Fangs and Little Missie :)) I'm not sure whether we'll still call her little missie when she is so much bigger, or indeed if she is female given that we bought her as an 'unknown' lol!! |

I always leave them 48 hours after a feed before handling that I think is a good practice but I don't mind feeding on consecutive nights if they want to take food, as in Nature they would have gluts and famines so when they do feed like that I always give a good break before feeding again although my normal took 4 feeds on consecutively nights and still fed again five days later so if they refuse thats fine but when they want to eat, within reason I will feed, I really appreciate your observation and comments. |

i would leave it another day before handling. you should wait at least 24hs after feeding before you handle. Like wise i think offering food again in less than 48 hrs from last feed is not good for your snake in the long run. and although he has taken it this time it could have had the reverse reaction and made him go of his feeding. just take it slow it will be worth it. |

Well although we haven't seen much of our new Spider Royal he fed again last night !! maybe making up for lost time :) but at least he seems to be a good feeder, can't wait to handle him hopefully tomorrow :) Little missie is just in the final throws of another shed, her eye caps have already detached and she is happy to be handled and wants to come out again even as I type this !! My experience so far of Royals is not what I have read, perhaps I have been fortunate to pick some very atypical ones - LOL |

that was quick! have to agree when and where possible definitley get a good look and handle of your animal before purchase. so you can see what they are like and check of mites,ticks, scaring or RI's or if you can't make sure you are buying from a reputable source who you personally trust well, not just going by what other people say. I would never buy a snake from a retailer that wouldn't allow you to handle the animal.(unless it had just been fed in which case i would ask if i could come back) |

Just a quick update, despite the travelling and the handling and what I supposed would be stressful for him he fed tonight only eight hours after settling in :) a really good sign I think he's going to be another good one, I have to say I would rather buy having seen and handled than buy sight unseen you can not only check their overall health but you get a chance to see their character too :) |

She beat me too it !! lol, took my daughter to look for a crested gecko to go with the one she already had, I had my hands sewn into my pockets but my partner Debbie said can we see a Spider and a Bumble and a Pinstripe and a ........ well that's how it went and having extracted my hands we bought a Spider - lol he's a lovely long CB09 male weighed in at 116g but seems healthy and inquisitive, so the collection begins to grow now she says a mojave would be nice - arghh ! the bank balance is depleting rapidly, wish that I had one !! - lol will post some picks when he's settled :) My normal royal - little Missie is now 178g she has put on 43g in the past 5 weeks and is now in the latter part of a slough, they are beautiful animals :) |
