Hiya im thinking of getting a royal. I have a corn snake so i do have experience with reptiles ( i also have a beardy ad a gecko) and as it happens im doing my work experience in a huge reptile store in June 2010 , and if i decide to get a royal hopefully i will have a good job and be able to pay for the stuff in stages over the two weeks i spen there :) My mum isnt happy about a royal pythong becuase of the "think what damage they can cause" factor which is fair enough i really just want to know whats the average size and age and, the neccesities of keeping a Royal, like what size viv? beacause i refuse to keep it in a rub or faun for an yperiod of its life and what lighting etc, would it be too much to ask if someone reli reli nice would list up everything with rough prices? For the Royals sake  |

ok thanks, on my corns viv i have a mat stat because i have a uv strip light which doesnt give off heat and as for the size i want to get one about a foot to 2 feet long which i guess is a hatchling :) so if i get the tank setup ready and after a few months of being in a rub or my faun she can go in right? about what size is suggested because i only want to really buy one viv to suit her , could a 3ft be used? and thanks guys for all replies its helped alot!!!! and still my mum is freaking out about me wanting a "fat" snake as she calls them lol |

Hi and welcome. You might think its a bit more technical if you don't have a stat for your corn viv. Which it seems a lot of people don't.
As for equipment Royals do prefer smaller spaces so if you are getting a hatchling? For the ROYALS SAKE you would be better keeping it in a rub or faun for the first few months at least. They get stressed out with large spaces and the first thing they will do when this happens is stop eating.
There are lots of threads on here about set ups etc and sizes of rubs/vivs for size of snake. Try and read as much as you can is the best thing you could do at this stage. |

Hi Josh, as Blackecho said the equipment is the same for a corn snake, make sure you don't get a viv too big as they prefer smaller spaces so as not to get stressed a faun is fine for a hatchling for the first twelve months, read the care sheet here on the forum and that should help any other advice then just ask, I think you will find that royals are far more docile and slower than corn snakes, I have an adult corn and she moves pretty fast my royals on the other hand are much slower and I have never heard them hiss let alone try to bite !! good luck :) |

can anyone give me prices and a link( maybe if i grovel to you loads and loads and love you lots you could put everything in a shopping basket on a reptile site and give me a good idea of what i need :) for the future) and every bit of info i need because i fin it better to talk to someone in a forum than to read the caresheets :) |

Yeah the damage thing as in like a corn snake might give you a nasty nip but she seems to think a royal is more dangrous no matter how much i explain it to her that they are docile and more defensive :/ would they hurt to the extent of injury if they constricted or bit? obviously constirction to the neck isnt good but really to be honest what are the chnaces of that? |

What damage can they cause?
Average size of around 5', about the same as a Corn, but girthier.
They can live 30 or 40 years if you're lucky. |
