Hello everyone,
Noobie here. Just getting a viv ready to pick up a Royal at the weekend.
I used to look after the school's python as a teenager (and the geckos, giant land snail, guppies, locusts, tarantula and two piranha!) But it was always Archie the Python I loved best. I would forget that he was curled around me and walk out the classroom with him still attached :) Much to the squeals of delight (and screams) of fellow students.
So finally I have the space and time to give a good home, I thought I would get an Archie replacement back in my life. I have had a read around the forum to refresh my memory on how to look after Royals properly. Couple of questions, if that's okay :)
Do you have to bake Aubiose?
Is there much difference between male and females behaviour/patterns/charcacteristics. I have only ever known a male.
After bringing him home - how long is best to leave him before feeding/handling?

Dexter arrived at the weekend,(Big thanks to Will at Global Geckos  ) and is settling well. He has already thoroughly checked out his new home; Likes his hide and the log. Temperature is a good constant. All is going great :) There is a rather arty picture at the link below. Not quite sure why it doesn't work work as an image - sorry, do the right click - view...

It is all about experiences and the only mites I have known are the ones I have brought home with a new animal and have never been re-infested, good quarantine always pays off :) We all suffer from Royals not eating as frequently as we think they should but so long as they are kept well and are healthy and happy the secret is just to relax and let them do their thing and that in turns brings the enjoyment of keeping such a wonderful animal :) |

i wish my school would get pets in the calssrooms, the only pets we have in school are fish in the biology rooms, and there boring |

Yeah it's all pretty easy, even the difficult stuff.
When your royals not feeding you're not exactly put out by it, neither is he, it's just what they do they'll eat again :) got nothing to put on a hunger strike for.
Although when they don't shed properly it can be bloody annoying >.< |

I'm nearly all set up now, just need a gadget for temp/humidity and we're ready to go!
It seems that I had it pretty easy with Archie; he would always eat, never fussed about being handled, never got mites or ill and never shied away from anything. This forum does make it sound like its all a lot more dificult to look after Royals, but I guess no one posts on a forum saying - nothing happened today all is well. lol. |

I wouldn't handle your snake until it has got into a nice feeding routine, also I tend not to try to feed until it has had a chance to get used to its new surroundings so I leave it a week before offering food.
You don't need to bake the aubiose, I use aubiose and I have never baked it for any of my snakes. |

Males and females in my experience are pretty much the same depends more on the individual snake other than size but still there are exceptions to the rule.
With handling and feeding I'm somewhat impatient and generally will try to feed 1-2 days after getting a snake home and start handling a few days later. A week is generally recommended however I've never had a problem doing it this way always had a feed but again it can depend on the snake.
and like Kelf I couldn't say on that one although I'm sure Blackecho mentioned using it so I'd ask him.

Normally a week is best left before handling and feeding to let him settle into his new enviroment.
I don't believe there is any real difference except the obvious between males and females, females grow larger but I don't think they'll do anything much different.
Not sure about the Aubiose sorry :(
