Posted - 21/12/2010 : 21:43:45 Evening guys and gals,
I'm so excited!!!
Had my heart set on a wee corn snake, then I had a cuddle with a Royal, and that was that!! So I'm picking up my little baby boy next week!! YAY!!
Set his RUB up tonight, so that I can ensure the temps are ok, and I'm having a little trouble (I'm used to vivs). I have a heatmat under the RUB, attached to a microclimate ministat 100, and the stat-probe sits in his hot hide.
I'm using a digital in/out thermometer, with the thermometer-probe in the hot hide and the unit in the cool side, so I can gauge the temps at both sides at the same time.
Anywhoos, the average hotside temp I'm getting is 87-88f (I set the stat at 90f for starters), but the max temp that I got went all the way up to 97f. And the cool end is going from 80-83f. Lots of fluctuation. The RUB is also sitting onto of the cool side of my Tegus viv (i thought there would be less external fluctuation).
Any suggestions on how I can stabilise the temps?

Posted - 24/12/2010 : 14:39:07 No, thank goodness, she had the sense not to hit it with a wallop.
And a couple of minutes after she'd scarfed ratty down and was retiring to her midway hide, she was right back to her shy and gentle little self and I had no trouble putting the viv back to rights. |

Posted - 24/12/2010 : 13:52:08 Ha - I was reminded of this thread when feeding Saada just now.
She's a dainty little girl, 09cf, very shy and demure but an absolute little eating machine. She likes to eat in-viv, so the routine is, lift out hide, lift out Saada, who is hiding her head like a baby, slip a piece of lino on top of substrate, replace hide on lino, replace Saada who dives back in hide, then present ratty at mouth of hide ...
This time she was waiting before ratty even got there - but she was so excited by the ratty smell that she couldn't think straight. She ignored me until I'd closed the viv - and then my gentle little girl surged out, glared at me - and struck at the glass! (Oy, I want my rat!)
All I could do was to do nothing until she'd calmed down and realised the rat was snuggled up next to her. NOM NOM!
When their minds are on their grub they are different personalities lol |

Suppose it's the same as my tegu, only time I got a love kiss off of him was when I didn't wash my hands properly before petting him.
Respect, respect, respect.....and antibac hand rub :-)

Hey Bob, yeah, never been too fond of the mat stats, but I had a spare one so I thought I'd try it with the RUB. Gonna build the new viv 2moro (a larger one for my beardie) then set up his old one for the Royal. Got lots of hides ready and ordered a dimmer stat for it. Picking the wee dude up on wed, so I've got a good few days to ensure it's all good :-) |

Posted - 23/12/2010 : 18:17:03 welcome from a fellow newbie!
gettin tagged is pretty rare, ive had one in 2 years..which incidentally WAS from my royal and was entirely my fault! (i thought he was at his cool end in his plant so started cleanin round his hide...where i used to feed him...and he was in there...nuff said) it didnt hurt, felt like a flick on the hand! he caught me right on the knuckle and he didnt look impressed! a lot of jaw re-locating was done after bless him! i felt awful! in short, dont worry, they are the friendliest of snakes and wcs it wont hurt anyway! enjoy your new friend!
ps IF for some reason he doesnt let go, run him under cool water and he'll get straight off. also write down the time of the bite and if you start feelin ill later just pop to a gp. normally nothin but i know a guy who somehow got salmonella froma royal bite. not common so dont be scared, just always respectful. |

Posted - 22/12/2010 : 20:07:28 Hi, you're highly unlikely to get tagged, but if you do, it's usually a feeding response. When Shahi was a baby we dropped his mouse between us and, misguidedly, I picked it up, so when it moved, he struck. OWWWW! It was like being brushed with velcro lol. It tickled. As soon as he realised I didn't taste of mouse, he let go; it was over in an instant. Moral of the story - use feeding tongs.
Royals are so gentle and usually timid; they're not usually a bitey snake. If you were bitten and the snake did hang on, it's important not to pull away as this could pull teeth from the snake's mouth. Also if you move, the snake will think your hand is 'alive' and will constrict more tightly in order to 'kill' it.
A very graphic thread about this is on photos - Con's 'My Girlfriend got Tagged.' Again this was a feeding response thing. And it discusses some ways to get the snake to let go.
But I gather this is rare with royals - you'll be fine!
Oops, yet another edit - don't buy the expensive feeding tongs from your rep shop - you can get identical kitchen tongs in Wilkinson's for a couple of quid. I like the ones with the soft plastic grips - royals are a bit dozy and they miss and bang their noses sometimes ... |

Posted - 22/12/2010 : 19:45:09 Thanks guys!!!
Yeah, I'm kinda worried about my rep room getting slowly overrun with snakies - lizards are my first love.
Anywhoos, decided to chuck the RUB. Just not getting the constant temps that I'd like, so he's gonna go straight into the viv (3 x 1.5), well part of it with tonnes of hides, as it should be much easier so regulate the heat with a bulb. As I don't have a pulse stat for him, I'm gonna have to steal my Tegu's until I can pick another up. He's a hardy we bugger, so he'll be fine.
Have done tonnes of reading and research, but I can't guarantee there won't be any silly questions.
Talking of which - does it hurt when you get tagged, and if it happens, what should I do?
