Posted - 17/03/2011 : 22:15:13 Hi everyone
I've had my RP for 15 years now. I don't know how old he is exactly, as he came via rescue and was already fully grown but I want to be ready for when he starts to get into his latter years. Are there any particular signs and should I be doing anything differently to make it easier for him? I could be jumping the gun as he's still a great eater but his last two sheds have not gone as smoothly as they used to and nothing else has changed.
Many thanks |

Posted - 18/03/2011 : 21:38:17 That makes me feel better, I've always thought he was abnormal as all I've ever heard is about their poor eating habits! It was quite a shock to my system when I first went to feed him, I nearly lost my finger |

Posted - 18/03/2011 : 21:28:33 I have snakes on both ends of that scale.
Terrible Shedders : Diablo and Cleopatra Great Shedder: Scar
Terrible Feeder : Scar Great Feeder : Diablo
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC FEEDER: Cleopatra hehe
Cleo is friendly as a snake can get but if there is a rat in the room she'll strike at anything that moves, even at the glass :P |

Posted - 18/03/2011 : 21:27:39 Yes - my Saada, cf09, once struck at the glass before I opened her viv (luckily she didn't actually bang her nose) when she saw her rat approaching, and she's normally a very gentle girl. Off her feed at the moment (started then stopped again) but with any luck she'll be back to being a little gannet soon. Shahi's a pretty fierce feeder too in the warmer months.
I reckon most royals are good feeders - just not all the year round lol. |

Posted - 18/03/2011 : 21:14:39 Bless him, sounds like he's going to regret not working hard enough, once a stud always a stud?! Alas the only behaviour Ulysses has ever shown is that he's hungry - trust me I don't say this to make anyone jealous (I've worked with them in the past and struggled), but from the day I got him, he's always been keen to feed - its often a fight to get the mouse inside before he strikes nor does he need me to make him think its alive Is anyone elses RP the same? |

Posted - 18/03/2011 : 20:09:11 22? Wow, I thought his breeding days would be long gone - not that I've ever sexed him, I wished for him to be male and its too late to disappoint myself now!
Thanks for your response, we are growing old together gracefully - both of us were definately more active when we first met, once I've got my act together I'll post a photo of Ulysses |

Posted - 17/03/2011 : 22:34:33 Hi and welcome to the forum.
I have a fellow feeling with your lad, approaching old age myself and waiting over 50 years for my first snake.
I've heard they can get a bit lazy in their advanced years ...hmm...figures ...
He sounds pretty good if he's eating well, and there are some good stickies on the health section about bathing/poor shedding.
Margwar on here has a 10 year old royal but most of us are newbies with young royals.
Amendment - Kelfezond has a snake in its teens (apologies Kelf!) and he plans to breed him, and someone posted in other reptiles and exotics about a young boa, I think it was, whose mother was 22.
So perhaps they don't get so lazy after all!
Oh, and this is a really good forum, loads of info!
