Hi, I currently have a western hognose, 2 corns(snow and amel), a normal royal and I have an albino and het albino on the way. I never use heat lamps and settle for heat mats and a thermostat instead and things have always been fine. I know some people say that you need both, anybody got experience of this? All the royals are under 1 year old so is it a case of the heat mat is fine now and I will need a lamp when they are bigger so they don't burn themselves.
I am always willing to listen and will help anyone if I can.
Cheers
Martin

baby royals are fine with heat mats, but as they get bigger, if you have the heat mat in the cage for a viv, when they sit on it, it causes a hot airpocket under neath and causes something else (cannot remember what it is called) and can cause burning to snakes. plus a bulb heats the viv better for royals as it heats the air as well as the substrate, giving u a nice temperature gradient
