Hello Fellow Forumees!!

My name is Sam (Samantha if I'm in trouble ;D)

I have recently been set the task of caring for my brother's 2yr old 4ft Royal Python ~ Cora & his 1yr old 4ft Carpet Python ~ Koshi; as he has gone off to university and he isn't allowed them there and travel would stress them out.

Koshi is still a bit jumpy but rarely nips now - any ideas on how to cure him of this for good? some people suggest letting him bite/nip until he gets bored? He is in a viv with 2 tier dowel and seems very happy to sleep hanging from them and i mist him at least twice a day.
Eats every week and had a beautiful shed 3wks ago.

Cora however is a bit more complex....
she has been in her viv for 10wks now (I've been looking after her for 16wks - she ws in RUB before) and has started to have feeding problems. first 2 wks she ate fine then 3wks not eating. she then ate for 2wks now coming to 3wks no eat again :(
have even brained one and she looked interested but she never ate it.
She doesn't strike feed anymore she eats off floor of viv - with kitchen roll or plastic underneath.
She is still very strong when I get her out and tongue is out and she is inquistive however she spends all her time in hot end of viv hide and i don't think she is drinking enough - she drank a lot more in RUB?!
The Viv is in the recommended heat range and humidity but she feels quite cold to touch which she never did with heat pad & RUB.
She also has a very pale white line/scratch on one of her eyecaps have checked viv but can't see how this occured so up'd humidity a little as read that dehydration can cause eyecap problems??

Sorry for the immense lot of info but she's really very special and important in our family being our first reptile and I'm worried.
Any advice would be gratefully received please
and any other info you need please ask

Thanks
Sam

Also just thought I'd add a little info here you might be interested, snakes eyes aren't like ours (obviously) they have a soft fleshy eye like we do but it's under a special scale called a spectacle so don't be too worried about his eye he won't be able to really damage it, even if it gets a bad scratch it's just his armour being scratched, like if I was to get a scratch on my glasses, bit annoying but won't effect my eyes.

she's was fine up until 10wks ago then she's been worrying me sick!

When i bought Blitz he was in a BIG MESS !! believe me. and after few sheds, he is brand new royal now

Hi Sandi

the "scratch" has no depth - it's like if you bend clear plastic and bend it back and it has a white line. and you are correct that it has no opacity and her last shed had eyecaps fully intact - i check everyone even when they're messy :S

but having said that she has gone into full blue shed since last night

hopefully it only one layer and she'll be shiny new by next week

sandi Posted - 28/09/2011 : 20:21:40
Oh that is a big scratch isnt it? Could be retained shed and i agree with my friends above that a wet pillow case or a damp towel should help remove it. You can sometimes tell if its a retained cap by the slight opacity of it but im not seeing this in the photo.

Dont worry about the feeding too much, hard not to but it could just be hormones at this time of year. My female, Florence, is hormonal and now reaching the point of nesting even without a mate! She ate her first meal in 4 weeks last week but has gone much longer than that before so i dont worry at all now.

Welcome to the forum by the way!

Should I be worried or will this come off in the next shed?

Sorry forgot to say thanks Tawfik x

20 weeks is mild, some people on here have had 6-7 months without feeding hehe

Hi Guys
Thanks for such a warm welcome.

Kelf - will try and get picture tonight if can
although her last shed was perfect i checked, it was her shed & good feeding in RUB that convinced us to put her into viv. but glad to hear that you think she's normal - at least someone in the family is

Tawfik - 20wks!!! really? that's unbelivable. my partner wanted to take her vet after 3 lol

Hi and welcome - yes as Kelf and Tawfik have said. It's what royals can do. They can be really secretive about drinking; it was ages before I saw my first royal drink. That eyecap certainly sounds like a retained one; a good remedy can be to put the snake into a damp pillowcase, tie the top securely, place in a ventilated rub, supervised, for 20 or 30 mins in a warm room, and let her squirm - the dampness and friction may loosen the eye cap. All the best.

I'm not a pro, but it looks like everything is good, as Kelf said, goin on and off food is nothing to worry about in royal world.
My snake fasted whole 20 weeks !! with not even 1 feed, and now he is feeding like crazy.
About drinking, u just have to provide her with fresh water everyday, and give her privacy, to go out drinking, and she will be okay
Welcome to the forum Sam.

If she is 2 years old she's going to be a big royal I assume, in this case I wouldn't worry about her going on and off food, that's just what royals do.

The eye cap problem sounds like retained shed would it be possible for a photo?

edit: And welcome to the forum :) Forgot my manners
