hello i recently bought my 4' male royal python he's 3yrs old the people i got him from were feeding him large rats although they did admit he's not eaten in about 6 weeks, i've now had him two weeks and have tried to feed him twice as he split his first one open but didn't eat it, tonight he's been more interested and opened his jaws quite a few times and kept moving into a striking position but no matter how long i spent moving the rat he didn't eat. Could these rats be too big for him??? As his neck is only about the width of my thumb. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you. |

yeah not large rats are the small ones just been to pet shop to buy him some fresh ones. I also warmed this one in a freezer bag so it didn't get wet. Have just spent another 20 mins wiggling it about for him with no luck although he does seem more interested so i've left room turned light off and shut the door so hopefully he'll eat now as i'm not looking forward to braining one.(wouldn't know how to anyway) |

Hi and welcome to the forum  When i got my Royal Python (Blitz) he didn't eat for 20 weeks. now he is feeding on hamster every 5 days. so there is nothing to worry about, 6 weeks in nothing for a royal although, hope hi will eat for you soon. |

Large rats maybe a bit too big for him, it depends how large they are. They vary from shop to shop. My royal Florence, is the same length as yours and is on small rats which weigh about 150grams. My boa, Boris, is on mediums which weigh around 200-250g. By that standard the large ones would be about 250g + and i wouldnt give my royal a rat that big!
The best thing would be to weigh your snake, then weigh the rat. as a general rule of thumb ratty should be about 10% of the weight of the snake. |

have you tried leaving the rat in over night? my pastel will only eat when the room is dark and quiet |

Hi and welcome to the forum and don't worry about the neck - it stretches lol!
Have posted on the feeding tips sticky as well - all the best - he'll be fine, they can go months without eating, especially at his age. |
