Posted - 16/03/2012 : 13:39:09 Hi all. Just joined the forum so thought would say hello! Although am familiar with keeping corn snakes,am new to keeping Royals having got mine just 3 weeks ago. She(he?? not sure yet!!) is just over a year old and is beautifull ! Have wanted a Royal for ages so when this one came up for sale complete with a nice big viv,I jumped at the chance! Not fed yet but is going thro' a pretty bad shed at the mo so hopefully all will be well in a few days and will take a feed Already have got lots of invaluable advice about my Royal looking thro' the forum posts so thanks to everyone. Will post up some pics soon when she is looking more presentable! |

Posted - 26/03/2012 : 10:17:58 Thanks everyone. Have put a couple of pics up in photo section. Will add some better ones soon. She is doing great now, exploring her viv a lot and spending lots of time basking instead of hiding away most of the time! Also took(with a lovely big strike and long "kill") her first rat weaner last night(on mice previously)so great to know will have no probs with her going from mice to rats!! So all good in my Royals world at mo!! |

I'm in the UK and don't find humidity a problem, although my favourite method in the royals' vivs is to keep the water bowl permanently in the warm end.
Congrats on getting your new royal, but sorry to hear about the shedding problem.
don't know if you've seen this but it works very well -

Tried the damp pillowcase on Sat and it worked a treat!! It realy loosened up the old skin and, after giving her a bathe with wet cotton wool was able to slowly remove what was left of the old skin.(except a bit around her head which she has rubbed off herself now!)Took a while but she was so well behaved during her ordeal!Amazingly calm and not one agressive move at all, almost as though she new I was just trying to help! Left her to chill out from it all untill last night, then,as she was well overdue a feed and has refused since I've had her(3 weeks)offered her one of my corns small fuzzies to try and temp her! Took it immeadiatly! Obviously in the mood! so in went a nice large mouse and,one big strike later, was on its way down! Suffice to say,I am a very happy cookie now! Was great to see her feed at last(I know its not been long in royal terms but great to see her feed for the first time in her new home!) She seems so much happier now that old skin is off and had a feed. Was spending most of the time in the hide but this morning found her sunning herself on top under the heatlamp!Must be feeling much better! Will wait a couple of days after her feed and then get her out for a photo shoot so I can post some pics up! Thanks again for your help and advice, much appreciated. |

Many thanks for the advice, think will try the pillowcase tip tomorrow.Yesterday I put her in a bowl of shallow warm water for a while with a face cloth to slither over and then gave her a bathe in there with damp cotton wool which seems to have helped but still has the old skin on the whole top part of her body(except for the tip of the tail which is shiny and new!! LOL) Also keeping humidity nice and high at mo too. Blimy - these Royals are hard work compared to corns ! Worth it tho' |

Posted - 16/03/2012 : 13:46:55 WELCOME!
The main difference between Royals and Corns is the difference in temp requirements and the humidity requirement. But, from what I understand, there's loads of humidity in England so it shouldn't be much of a problem. I'm in Florida and we get a big swing in humidity from high 60% to very low 10% which makes me pull my hair out sometimes... LOL.
But, I just gotta tell ya...

LOL! |
