Posted - 25/04/2012 : 00:46:57 Hi all! Used this fab forum for info before I got my first royal a week or so ago, an 8 month old normal. Everyone seems so lovely and friendly! Hes settled in great and took his first mouse champion on Friday. Just a quick question, I had a look at the weight/age graph and I'm worried his weight is quite low. Should I be feeding him rats rather than mice as someone mentioned they have better nutritional value?he is 200g and the guy I bought him from said he was on medium mice once a week. Also does anyone no of any good beginner books regarding Royal genetics/ morphs etc? Glad to be on board! |

Posted - 25/04/2012 : 23:19:37 Thanks JB, that's great I had a look on amazon and it was 50 quid! Will definitely be buying this payday! Give him another mouse today and he wolfed it down so hopefully he will put some extra beef on quickly. Will post pics of my lovelies soon as I get my camera fixed too.

Posted - 25/04/2012 : 22:29:51 Hi, and welcome
I'm new too, but can thoroughly recommend the complete ball python!
I picked up a copy a couple of months ago, the cheapest place at that time was:

Posted - 25/04/2012 : 19:04:15 When I had Osiris, he used to be on mice and he was being fed every seven days. I decided to try him on rats as I was also told that they have a better nutritional value. I now feed him on Rat Fluffs every five days and within thee three weeks I changed him to Rat Fluffs he miraculously put on seventy-one grams and he's getting a right chunky thing now BUT every snake is different.
My other half, Ajokocha, and I bought our snakes at thee same time so they are around thee same age and he has no problem feeding his snake on mice. So like I said before, every snake is different... (:
Welcome to thee forum by thee way too. LOL. |

Posted - 25/04/2012 : 13:42:20 Thanks for all your advice everyone, I'll try feeding him every 5 days for a while see if that works. Sounds like a plan Burned at the stake cheers! I'll give him a few more mice then see if he will take rats. I think I might invest in that book too as I've become a bit obsessed and want to find out as much as I can now! |

Posted - 25/04/2012 : 11:23:22 I wouldn't worry about his weight too much some snakes just take their time getting big, I have a girl who is over a year old and only about 200g :(
Thanks Bats :D |

Posted - 25/04/2012 : 11:21:23 Hi and welcome. Here is a good feeding guide recommended by Blackecho -
Royal weighing 0-400g - feed every 5 days 400-800g - feed every week 800-1200g - feed every 10 days 1200g+ - feed every 14 days
Feed 10/15% of royal's weight.
I (like loads of others) prefer to get royals on to rats because when the snake's an adult, feeding one suitably sized rat is much easier than faffing about with several mice. I bought Surahi when she was 4 and was told that she would only eat mice. However, eventually she agreed to eat a rat, bless her.
With your lad, you could always try letting him settle in and let him have say 3 mousey meals before trying him on rats - at his weight you'd need to buy a rat fluff (or fuzzy - different places call them different names.) Many royals switch over okay - all the best with him.
The best book I've come across is Kevin McCurley's 'Complete Ball Python' which can be pricey - but there's loads of info on the net. I'll look for some links.
There are a couple of good links on this thread -

Posted - 25/04/2012 : 01:06:17 Hello and welcome. I think 200g for an 8 month old royal is a bit on the light side. You could try feeding him every five days instead of seven to bump him up a bit. And rats do have a higher fat content than mice but it can be tricky switching them over. No harm in trying though :). But saying that, both mine are on mice at the minute, every five days, and they're putting weight on just nicely. Totally up to you though, good luck in whatever you choose to do :). Look forward to some pics as well :). |
