At the end of the month I have a male royal arriving whos a large year old .
The guy im getting him from has said that he,s a fab feeder and feeds him in his rub that the snakes kept in .
when I was viewing the snake the guy removed it from the rub with a snake hook and it was totally fine to handle puppy tame infact.
when this fella comes to me he,ll be in a 4ft viv can I get away feeding him in the viv??? as its starting over in a new environment?
or am I dicing with getting a tasty nip? and am I better getting a rub to feed in ? my others are all fed in viv and are totally fine .
may be a totally stupid question be gentle :s |

Sorry on my phone fail ..... He said it is just crazy hungry when it comes to being fed and he feeds it in the rub so safer to take out with a hook ??

Going to echo what others have said - viv defensiveness in my opinion is a myth I have always fed every snake of mine in the viv or RUB none have showed any signs of being viv defensive or hungry when the doors open. Personally I don't think our little royals have the intelligence to notice patterns like that.
What is the size of the royal you were looking at because I cannot fathom why he would use a snake hook on a royal unless it was an adult and particularly agressive at that. |

Well he's being collected end of next week so il see what happens lol chances are he,ll be fine just the guy totally threw me with the snake hook business like it was a king cobra or something lmao !!!! .... Maybe I shouldn't laugh :s |

I think the viv defensive thing is a big concern, if you own a reticulated python!!
I always used to be concerned about the substrate eating thing, but when my royal stopped eating in his rub and would only eat in viv I did more research. I couldnt find anyone who has ever had a health problem from feeding in a viv. All shops do it. Im sure anyone with more than a couple of snakes hasnt got time to do it any other way.... |

all mine feed in their vivs. no aggressive/defensive behaviour from any of them
you're always gonna get people commenting that they might swallow substrate if you feed in the viv, or the flip side of you're disturbing the snake to feed him/her then disturbing them again to put them back.
Feeding is a natural response, and if I'm honest we are running the risk of mothering them too much by saying "if they miss strike they'll hurt themselves, or eat substrate" or "they won't eat if we have to move them". I say your new fella, once settled in will be absolutely fine feeding him in the viv if that is what you decide to choose.

There is also a risk of the snake missing and hurting them self, if you feed from a front opening vivarium it's hard to keep you hand out of the way of the striking area and as always substrate could be consumed. |

I feed mine out of the rubs just so they don't trash it when they strike the mice/rats and so they don't swallow any aspen |

I feed afew outside their vivs,mainly so i can clean/check everything over without being annoyed by said snake :) |

he,ll have to learn lol but I do think if I feed him more often 1x week rather then every other week that maybe he,ll chill out a bit and not be so eager to chomp on anything that goes in ? |

I feed all mine in their viv and have never had any problems, saves having to handle them after a meal too |

I would if it was my snake cause its hard to make a young royal overweight cause whatever they eat it just makes them grow lol. And I know of some breeders who feed the adults every week and they are all healthy and not fat |

He said its eager to be fed so can get a bit rub defensive ?
saying that he feeds it every two weeks so im wondering if its hungry ??? at a year old I feed my current snake once a week
so im wondering if I should do the same with this one as similar age ? |

I feed all mine in viv too, never been bitten. I think its a bit of a myth that feeding in viv causes viv defensiveness as defence and feeding are a million miles apart in terms of behaviour.
There is still the chance of getting a nip at any time, snakes do sometimes just have a pop at us but that's nothing to worry about, if you dont startle them or put your hand in the line of fire when feeding them then the chances are greatly reduced.
(I would say though if he removes the snake with a hook he may know something you dont about it been a bit defensive, you'll soon find out though). |
