Why do you feed your snakes rats?
Is it simply size so less rats needed?
Is it that the nutrients in rats are better for royals?
I just wondered because my corns have mice and rats are frowned upon as a food source for the bigger snakes.
I have noticed that you suggest trying mice for non feeders to entice them, so mice are not a really bad thing.
I'd find it interesting to hear your views and reasons.  |

We were advised by the breeder we bought Nigel from to feed rats. He said its a lot easier, cheaper and better for the royal to feed a single adult rat than several adult mice at one meal as there is less fur for the snake to deal with and their would be more nutrition in the rat than the mice. Nigel is 6 months old and already on 110g-120g rats so he would be eating several mice already, dread to think how many mice he would end up eating as a grown adult.
I will say that corns can eat rats with no adverse effects as long as you feed less often. |

I think it just depends how fussy the royal is some will eat whatever is in front of them but like you said if they are fussy and you give them something for a treat they might be hard work trying to get them back to their normal food |

I knew rats had too much fat for the cornsnakes but didn't know if they would be too fat for royals too.
I assume the size of royals means they need the extra fat.
I also find it interesting that royals can have a variety of prey.
Although I suspect that they can be difficult feeders would suggest sticking mostly with one sort of food!

Its just because rats have more fat on them so better for the royals. As with corns its same reason really because rats have more fat its easier for them to become overweight so just have to be careful that's why most people feed them mice |

its just easier to feed an adult one big rat rather than 3 or 4 mice.
all my snakes get rats most of the time including my mums corn snake but will give them a chick now an then for some variety |
