Hello im new to this site and i just bought a 7-8 month royal 1 week today. he is about 24 inchs long, and came in a 2x1x1 viv, with a 150w bulb conected to a habistat dimmer. i was also given a very small heatmat which is approx 3inch x 7inch (7watt), and TOLD to put this under the substrate and a hide which is to be all placed at one end under the bulb.
Sooo i was told to turn off the bulb at night and leave the heatmat on constantly.
my problem is that the hot end during the day is around 88-90(with the bulb and heatmat) but at night when i turn it off it drops to around 70 with just the mat on.... i think this is too cold for him at night,
what am i doing wrong????? :(

as it's a young snake i'd either ditch the heat light and stick with the mat only, or invest in an IR or ceramic that you can leave on 24/7

photoperiod is very important, a night time drop isn't though

Yes, it gets its day/night routine from natural daylight in the room. I use red heat bulbs 24/7, a 60W should be fine in that size viv.

the bulb that i have got is not red, its white, would a red one be ok 24/7 as i have been told that it needs a day/night routine??

As above, I would ditch the heat mat and just use the bulb 24/7. (If the heat mat is not on a stat it can get too hot to touch, which would burn the snake).

The set up you have been given is to cater for a night time temperature drop.

The lamp and dimmer stat are fine to be run 24/7, (providing it is a red lamp) and the heat mat can be removed if you wish, or you could leave it as it is, the choice is yours. I would however always reccomend that the heat mat is attached to it own stat to prevent it overheating.
