Got snake number 2 coming tonight woo hoo lol

Anyway, he's on a heat mat and I think he always has been. He's coming a week early so dont have bulb set up, i was going to order it all on monday (still am).

Is there a way to stop any chance of thermal blocking occuring, i know its just a slight chance since it is stated but ive saw too many shocking pictures to not worry. Im going to use aspen so if i put a few layers of kitchen roll down first then an inch or 2 of aspen do you think it will be safe enough?

Im taking Orlinas thermometer off her just now so i'll have quite a few readings from the mat...dont worry Orlina's not on a mat and i have a thermo gun to keep a check on basking temps and as i say her temps have hardly moved in 3 weeks.

I know im probably over worrying but like i said too many pictures have disturbed an already disturbed mind lol

LOL - I take it she got a bit of a shock eh?

I remember the first time I ever fed a snake - it was Buffy, then smaller than the smallest shoelace - and she grabbed that pinky like a good'un! Knowing nothing about snakes at that time, I was gobsmacked - but it gets kind of addictive - as I'm sure you'll know - and CONGRATS on the feed!

If you've no lino or carpet - what about a sheet of cardboard? Just something thin and rigid that the snake can't move. If you haven't got a cardboard box, have you got a large calendar with a cardboard back that you can tear off?

Have you got him now then?

I've got a heating cable in with my royal, which came with the viv. I've laid some old floor tiles on top of it and the temp is perfect. Tia's favourite hide is on it and it's also where she chooses to perform her toilet.
The real plus with it, is that the tiles are really easy to clean.

Yip always there with the gun lol

Ive got spare carpet lying around so I'll cut a bit to cover the mat. I'll get the bulb set up on next day delivery so should be up and running on tuesday so its not too far away I spose. I'll keep the mat at 28C thats the temp inside Orlina's hot hide but he wont have a basking area but since he's coming to new smells etc he'll probably not be out much.I'll keep him next to a radiator to up the ambient temperature as well since the mat wont do that, I'll aim for 26C and give the sides a wee spray so it doesnt dry the air out as well

Hi, as a fellow worrybucket, I might not be much help lol, but personally I wouldn't put anything of any thickness on a heatmat, because of the danger of thermal blocking. It's true though that aspen is a great heat blocker, but when he gets into his new viv and zooms round exploring, he'll probably move it all over the place.

Have you got a bit of lino or thin carpeting that would keep him from coming into direct contact with the mat? Other people might have ideas too.

You sound to be as bad as me - creeping round with the temp gun at three am - I'm sure he'll be fine for a few days until you can install his bulb.

Congrats on the new arrival!
