i have two vivexotics vx36's one on top of the other both housing male royals khan and monty. both ir bulbs are on the same side. both vivs temps are showing 32.6 in the hot end but the top vivs bulb is only lit dimly. temp probes are both on the sustrate beneath the bulbs.i know obviuosly the bottom bulb is heating the floor of the top viv and i know the temps are reading corrct. the thing i'm worried about is that mid way in the top viv is not nearly as hot as in the bottom because the top bulb is barely on. am i just being a worry wart. i have just put four small tiles under the top viv at each corner to act as spacers to see if it helps.

ok so i have solved the bleeding heat problem with the viv stack. as reptilemadd said i have used two sheets of the radiator foil shiny side down in between the two vivs with no spacers and all is fine. correct temps holding fine and both bulbs running at the same power. thanks for all the help/suggestions.

ha ha ours are more likely to wrap themselves round your neck and lick your face. due to lack of space i have a few ideas i will try over the next couple of days, let you know how i gat on.

Brave bugger sticking your head in a viv round a royal, lol. Maybe thats just Duke.

I know what you mean the air in a royal viv feels warm and claggy, I'd say if your bottom one is perfect and the top one feels different its more than likely different. A nice big airgap or separating them might be the best bet.

sorry my habbit of skim reading again. ive not had this prob but another option is the building insulation. it comes in different thicknesses and has a reflective side, don't know how much it is a sheet tho and its easy to cut. weather it would be heat resistant enough would be another matter too

sorry not much help lol

temps do seem to be holding ok but the point i'm trying to make is that the bulb below is heating only the substrate where the temp probe is of the viv above, stick your head in above the substrate and it isnt warm, or not what i think is warm enough in comparison to bottom viv. the stat of the top viv is dimming the bulb really low thinking its warm enough when its just a warm substrate. still waiting on another temp reader for the top viv for the ambient temp but i would almost gaurantee it will be reading too low.

ive never had a pro with temps with a 30mm gap mine hold steady

i don't see why it wouldn't work but i would just keep an eye on temps over a couple of days and if they are ok i wouldn't bother with the reflective stuff

just a thought, would one of those foil type car windscreen sun reflectors cut to size between the vivs do the trick. the gap currently is nearly 30mm an not seeming to have much effect. been looking at heat reflective matting on ebay an its really expensive.
blackskull Posted - 21/03/2011 : 21:55:14
i have spacers between my vivs, only because i run the cord through the top of the viv for the bulbs. i use 30mm square timber (fell in my car from work lol) one at the back and one at the front, so far not had any probs with sagging on the bottom viv
Lotabob Posted - 21/03/2011 : 19:44:35
I'm just glad you understood it lol. My ambient is measured in the back corner of the cold side shielded from any stray heat off the bulb by some foliage. about 1 cm off the substrate. The hotspot probe (& stat probe) is slap bang in the centre of the hotspot directly under the bulb.

My issue was a corn snake viv on top of a royal viv, it overheated the poor corns viv in a few hours, I put a 2cm spacer in between but it didn't help so I switched them around. The corns viv barely loses any heat out of the roof so that solved the problem. I now have a planned layout to not cause problems, corn snake and BRB viv's on the bottom, Royal and Boa's on top, free standing GTP viv. That way they shouldn't interfere with each other.

Another thing with spacers is there needs to be enough spacers to support the weight of the top viv and transfer the load to the bottom viv without warping either.

what size dividers are you using lotabob, i completely agree with your last post. where do you position the temp probe for your ambient.
Lotabob Posted - 21/03/2011 : 18:26:42
The problem I saw is my stats all measure hotspots and the ambient regulates itself off the heat of the bulb, if the rising heat causes the bulb to be dimmed right down it means the ambient will be higher than the hot spot temp I aim for so the ambient is all out of whack and then there is no hotspot because the bulb is dimmed way down so thermal gradient and the snakes ability to regulate its temp goes out the window.
Kelfezond Posted - 21/03/2011 : 18:09:35
My vivstack is built in so its not one on top of the other and they all read the same temp, however the top bulb hasn't been on for about 2 days and only comes on when the windows in the room are opened, the bottom one is very bright and the middle two are dim :p

I assume they fix themselves thanks to the stats

So, BE and Robert, do you mean that you stack your vivs without dividers? I'm very interested in this before I put my stack together, as I'd assumed that the stats would correct any extra heat 'bleeding' through the vivs. I'd thought that this 'bleeding heat' (pardon the term) would be a good thing, because less heat would be wasted - recycled, in fact.
Robert Posted - 21/03/2011 : 10:21:49
I have a stack of 3 Vivexotics and the middle one is always at temperature acording to my digital thermometer and like yours the bulb is always dimmer as heat is coming in from the top viv and the bottom viv so no problems there I think
Blackecho Posted - 21/03/2011 : 06:48:18
Wood is quite a good insulator, I'm sure it'll be warm enough. I have stacks of 4 vivexotics and the temps sit fine.
1982ltrav Posted - 20/03/2011 : 21:16:07
increased the gap to about 3/4 inch seems to be helping a little.
reptilemadd Posted - 20/03/2011 : 20:51:26
Spacers will help the air flow between the two but I would raise it a little higher than the thickness of a tile, you could also try that reflective insulation you put behind rads in the home shinny side down on top of the bottom viv, this will also help keep the heat away from the top viv, hope some of that helps.
Lotabob Posted - 20/03/2011 : 20:50:58
I had the same problem, the best way would be to get some wooden blocks and provide an airgap between the 2 vivs.
