So, tonight, we see Kate in her hot hide - the first time in ages so I think, right, let's moisten that moss in her cave, which is on the cool side, to help her shedding. Pick the cave up to remove it and, surprise #1, find a poo behind it! Then, on lifting the lid of the cave, surprise #2, find a little coiled up snake skin inside! Cue mass interest and a little hysteria (it was bed time for our 2 kiddlywinks so you can't blame them, and I was quite excited too LOL!) and then I gently uncoil the skin and, bar the ends which started to tear I managed to get this:

I'm then thinking, well perhaps she'll be OK to have a quick 'walkies' so get her out and she is as good as gold with both the children and I for a good 10 minutes. Also I have a good look at her eyes (not too close, mind) and all over her body and I can't see any retained shed... well, what do I know... what I mean is, I don't see what I would imagine it would look like... no bits of skin hanging off or any flaky bits - just fresh, shiny new skin! Here she is, poking around in her viv again. Does that look like a good shed? I was scared stiff of getting eye-caps but do her eyes look OK?

Have taken the opportunity to remove poo, remove the moss from the hide, flannel from the top of the hot hide and have F10ed the cave. She's back now, and looks happy.

Definite change in behaviour... last night was the first time we'd seen her out at all for many nights. Now we're wondering when she shed. Could have been last night, or the night before. And all in the very tight confines of her cave. Amazing!

Doesn't really matter when she did it, or how... the important thing is that she's done it and we've got over an important snake-keeping hurdle, I think! We're delighted! Thanks everyone for all the advice on humidity and flannels and not worrying etc. etc. It' been so helpful.

Here's to another successful feed over the weekend. We've so far had 2 refusals and 1 success so hoping to at least balance the odds!

Happy snaky weekend!

Steve

She looks great, Steve. You would definitely tell if she had retained shed, especially around and over the eyes. You should find her appetite will be back on-line now.
Tia was covered in bits of old shed when I got her (previous owner was clueless), but after a few warm baths she was nice and shiny.

LOL - that is so cool - warned you didn't I? Secretive little devils they are!

Her eyes look fine to me.

If the skin won't unravel completely, try dampening it slightly and it should open out then.

Congrats!!
