Which is better, feeding the royal in it's viv or in seperate container ? |

I'd personally rather feed out of viv, and Shahi, who strike fed, who came to me as a hatchling, sort of got 'trained' ... umm, shall we say 'accustomed' - as if anyone could 'train' a royal! Well, he got used to the routine. (Lift into feeding rub, tongs come over the side with prey attached...ah, dinner!)
My two girls came to me as adults, and, I was told, prefer in-viv feeding and the prey left for them to feed at leisure. Shahi also got used to this just as a bit of pampering while emerging from the Big Fast. (But looks like he's back to strike feeding and hopefully in a rub again.)
What I do with the in-viv feeders is, a couple of hours beforehand, lift up the cold hide (and snake too if it's in there.) Put down one of those doggy feeding mats or kitchen roll, replace hide on top and usually snake will go back in there, after giving you a dirty look.
Then when the prey is ready, one places the napkin over arm, places prey at mouth of hide, and polishes up French waiter accent ...
'Madame (or Monsieur) est servi! Bon appetit!'
With any luck snake will coil round prey in hide and not drag it out on to substrate ...
Rubs are easier. But, as said before, whatever the snake wants ...

Margwar used to be fed out of his vivarium, then he just started getting fed in his vivarium, and he had a wooden disk that his mouse was put on, he used to eat off that, like a dinner plate basically, he wasn't always a massive strike feeder.
Now, with his new set up, he has a sandstone paving slab which he usually eats off, but now he strikes, but still drops it on the slab and eats off that instead.
Our new king was going to be fed out of his vivarium, but seen as he took his first feeds in his vivarium fine, we're going to leave him in there, plus he's a bit feisty when he first comes out of his vivarium! |

I used to feed all my snakes in viv, but after my royal got a bit of substrate stuck in her mouth that I had to remove, I feed her in a rub. She's fine with that.
Tia, my royal, has a bigger cake hole than my other two snakes (a corn and a cali) and because of this may be more prone to swallowing substrate. She seems to move her mouth quite far either side of the mouse compared to the others, therefore increasing the chances of shovelling up some substrate.
My other two feed in viv with out problems. |

Personally I use a 'friendly' substrate and prefer not to disturb them before eating by moving them, so feed in-viv. But each to their own. |

Just preference really, I feed some in and some out.
If you use certain substrate such as wood chipping it can get stuck on the mouse and ingested by the snake but most people will lay a piece of paper down for the snake to feed on or just use paper substrate.
It'll depend on you and your snake if its awkward to feed in the viv, I have some down very low or up high which can be a pain i'll feed them in a box, others go into hunt mode as soon as rat scent hits the air in which case I feed inside to avoid getting bit, she even strikes the glass when a rats in the room.
You'll find your own pattern. |
