I recently made an enquiry to a certain company regarding the cost of a rack, of the same size that I was asked to price up, now admittedly they gave me a price for everything, rack, rubs, heating, stat, and possibly setup except that for some reason they gave me a price that included 33ltr rubs and not 50ltr ones, anyway I couldn't believe it when they came back to me with a price that was £800 more than I had priced it at, and if I wanted back and sides on it, it would cost me an extra £160, now I'm no expert but I do know that 24, 50ltr rubs heating and a stat would not come anywhere close to £800. Anyway just thought I'd share lol

I know your not badwool and I too know how hard it is to run a business because mine went under after loosing three big contracts, but even while I was doing it I was still one of the cheapest around but most of the time people paid more money somewhere else and that is their right lol, but if I were to do this as a business my costs would go down as I'd be able to buy in bulk, and if you are happy to pay some one that much more money then fair play to you. All I can say is it must be a very special unit, and as far as mine goes it's not what I would sell as I cut a few corners since it was only mine, and I've seen enough of other peoples racks on the internet to know that the ones I can produce do not justify the other peoples being nearly three time as much.

They are extremely different, the only similarity being the frame material.

when photobucket is back up I'll post some pics so you all realise I'm not just being an argumentative penis lol

Aye the movement on my one isn't an issue Si' the rack works perfect well and does all it was meant to. As you said, couple of mistakes were made but all fixed for free so no problem :)

In my opinion I wouldn't say that Euro-rack's one isn't in the same league I think they're pretty much identical except Eurorack has some pretty sides which Simon's one doesn't. Either way they both do the same job, both work pretty well but have different prices.

As far as I can see there is no problem with this thread, let's just all try to play nice :)

I'm fairly certain I know which company you are talking about and all I'll say is this.

1) If you decided to do this as your main source of business I GUARANTEE that at some point you will want to earn something and your overheads WILL go up (staff etc if you get that busy) and at that point you will bring your prices up (we all need to make a living)

2) I've seen your recent rack in the DIY forum, and whilst it looks 100000000x better than anything I could ever make, it isn't even in the same league as who I think we're talking about.

If we're not talking about the same people/company - then ignore all the above.

ps - please don't take any of this as hostility, I just know what it's like running a business and how damaging threads like this can be.

Dave.

No Badwool your right it isn't my full time business but it is something I'm working towards, and it is something I think I can do as well as others and yes the proof is in the pudding, I've posted pic's on the DIY section of the one I've just finished for myself and I did one for kelf earlier this year and whilst, I am the first to admit there were things that needed changing and they were done, my intention was not to "bad mouth" anyone and that is exactly why I didn't use specific names. The point I was trying to make was like anything in the "reptile trade" if it says "designed for reptiles" on it they are usually vastly over priced. And to say as long as people are happy with everything what does the cost matter? is a non argument especially in todays financial climate, a saving no matter how much is a saving............

F.A.O Kelf I asked about movement and was told that there usually is a little in the bigger racks and although yours is only 1 rub wide it's quite high and as I mentioned the only way to get rid of most of it is to either completely enclose the back and sides or use diagonal braces on at least one side and the back.

There is always someone who can claim to do something of equal quality but cheaper than someone else in business. But it's not always the case.

Even in my line of work I have the same thing happen all the time.

The proof as they say is in the pudding.

You even said so yourself it's not your business so why realistically would you want to make money on it? It is however other people's livelyhood and there income source so, if people are happy with the product, the customer care and the after sales care then what does the cost matter?

This kind of thread I don't agree with.

Haha madness, I know your prices are the best :-) just more than I can DIY on a budget
reptilemadd Posted - 15/09/2012 : 10:16:01
LOL yes mate I thought I'd find out what their prices were like since everyone seems to rave about them.

Your probably right blackskull but even so, I only make them as on offs and not as a business so my material costs are pretty much retail but I could do the same rack with the bigger rubs for at least £400 cheaper and still make money for my labour, this is the problem with this country we only seem to like paying for something if it's stupidly over priced......
How many people shop around then buy from people like you,and not the company you asked? Is it the steel/aluminum type racks? As i bet they even buy all the parts from china to.

blackskull Posted - 14/09/2012 : 23:03:07
I understand where your coming from, i ask the price of things i make every now and then and its shocking but then a company has rates to pay, wages then theres VAT on top. I only ask the price after i have made it, dont want it to put me off knowing there is 5k worth of oak i have to work with lol

It will be the labour cost that bump the prices up, labour costing more than materials

when people have asked me how much a door would cost to make im sure they think im joking. The company i work for charge something like £35 an hour then you have material costs. I have made doors that are close to £1000
