has anybody used the cheap thermostats instead of the branded ones ?

no problem i also get my ceramic bulbs from HSUK same as the branded ones just without the label

i use these thermometers and they work fine.
the only thermometer ive had break was an exo terra branded one.

yes DIY/garden center bamboo is fine to use long as its not been treated with varnish ect

i collect my own wood get dry fallen stuff an make sure its not from any conifer type trees.
i use this method usually bake if small enough or scrub with f10/bleach then rinse with water an let dry
