Posted - 20/11/2010 : 19:38:06 Well, it's a rather sad dark evening - but only a month to the Solstice!
Just to liven things up a bit, following the success of Reptiledanny's user name thread, what are your snakes' names, and why did you call them that? Include other pets as well! AND what other names have you got up your sleeve for snakes on your wishlist????
To start the ball (pun intended!) rolling:
Shahi's name is Urdu for 'royal'. Saada is Arabic for 'happiness.' Right at the moment, if I got another royal, I'd call her/him 'Surahi', which is one of those Asian water pitchers with the slender neck and plump belly - just right for a royal python!
(Er... Shahi also answers to 'Sausage' ... )
The corns all have corny American names - Buffy, Spooky and Saffron are pretty obvious, given their morphs. My ex husband named Cy, Cyclops, because she's only got one eye. Spider got her name as I was putting her into her viv when she came home, and I said, 'come on, Spider.'
My tomcat (retired) Finn was a feral who turned up on St Patrick's day, so got called after the Irish hero, Finn McCool. Emily, another stray, is named after Emily Bronte. Mouse got brought along by Emily, and I took one look at her and said, 'hello, Mouse!' The name stuck ...
Right, over to you! |

Posted - 12/01/2011 : 20:29:50 Ha ha! I hate navy blue for the same reasons! There has been a couple of tv docs on synesthesia over the years, turns out a few famous people have it too, including one of the great composers. Not bad company to be in!
I wonder how snakes see colour? if red light is percieved as dusk, how about the rest of the spectrum......off to ponder and google! |

Wow, that's amazing! Umm well, Lilith for me is a sort of smoky coiling shape ...oh no, not navy blue, it was my school uniform colour, I don't do navy lol! But yes, 'Florence' to me is black and gold and sort of scalloped, lacy, very dark and mysterious ... This is fascinating! |

Your gonna think im odd but i have synesthesia so i went for a name which was the same colours as the royal markings...Florence!
Next one will probably be Cybele, she was a godess associated with snakes but a little on the dark side! mens genitalia were sacrificed in her name!
I have 2 Alaunts (dogs) Willow (she loves water is agile and gracefull like the tree) and Brochan her son who is huge, name Broch from the nordic and celtic meaning stronghold or fortress. So translation: 'of the stronghold'
Husband Tom, worst behaved animal in the house!
LOL - husbands always are. And impossible to housetrain!
I never knew Cybele was associated with snakes ... ah, hang on, is there a link with the Sibyls? The Pythonesses? Must google it.
Gorgeous names.
ps Wow! Talk about learning something every day. I'd never heard of synesthesia, have just googled it. Er, that's what I do. For instance, the days of the week all have different colours and letters and words all have different personalities so that I have like an automatic spellcheck in my head ...I thought it was just due to a stern '50s primary school.
Personal question, I know, but how has this affected you? (You don't have to answer if you don't want! ) |

Posted - 10/01/2011 : 14:02:53 There're other dukes - Duke Ellington for instance ... funky!
I like 'Spot' - that's how my Spider got her name - it just came to mind as I was putting her into her viv. She's an anery like Spot, lovely little guy, do like anerys! |

Posted - 09/01/2011 : 21:48:41 My corn snake Spot had 2 names lined up, either Apollo because of the rocket shape on his head or marmite (reserved for the MBK now) but when I picked him up and went to pop him in the vivarium I said 'there you go Spot' and it just stuck instantly, Its odd, he isn't Spotty really. As for Duke, he is a Royal Python, everyone has the Python puns taken care of so I concentrated on the Royal bit, he looks too tough to be a Queenie so going down the Royal family in order The Duke of Edinburgh was next, hence Duke. Just hoping he doesn't turn into a bumbling crazy racist snake now. LOL. |

Posted - 09/01/2011 : 15:18:37 LOL - those are great! Huey ...
I believe the name 'Ka' with one 'a' is Egyptian for 'soul'- Kaa or Ka very appropriate for a royal. Nice.
And as for 'Nora Batty' - I think that must be the superb name of the century! That is brilliant! |

Posted - 09/01/2011 : 13:17:14 My royal I named Kaa.. Mainly because I didn't know what to call him, and my step dad suggested Kaa from the film the jungle book, and i felt that suited him perfectly I also have a bearded dragon named Aggro.. This is because when my parents got him they got in a really big arguement and said he caused 'absolute aggro' haha My leapoard gecko died a few years ago, but I loved his name and the story behind it.. I named him huey because when i brought him home i got really bad car sickness and my dad thought it was funny to call him huey as that was the sound i would be making if i was going to be sick Ermmm I have 3 cats, with fairly simple names, they're called fluffy, tibby and twigglet I have a dwarf rabbit called berty and two guinea pigs called bubble and squeek. My hamster is called Nora Batty, because 1. Se knaws everything in her cage and 2. Because she hangs upside down in her cage and thinks shes a bat, so we put it together and came up with nora batty lmao And lastly my dad has a turantula, that me and my step mum named sessel, purely because my dad didnt like the name LOL |

Posted - 22/12/2010 : 14:41:25 Ah, my Saada's name is Arabic - it means 'happiness.' (As you'll know of course!)
I've often thought a nice name for a royal would be 'Sula.' It's Norse ...for 'gannet' lol - well, they are when they're in eating mode! |

Posted - 22/12/2010 : 13:50:00 I have set up a competition on Facebook (just amongst my friends of course) as I just cannot come up with a good name and I thought it would be a fun way to involve them with her (or him but I'm calling her a her. So far I've had nothing amazing but will be patient and see what comes up. Hmm need to think of a prize. Frozen mouse anyone?
I used to have goldfish called Dud & Pete, border collies called Patsy and Eddie, an orange cat called Orange Cat, an orange cat called Sidney and now have a fluffy white cat called Lulu (pearl in Arabic). |

Posted - 21/12/2010 : 23:27:46 LOL - my Shahi gets called Fatboy Slim! and the local kids call Finn 'Garfield' ... say no more ...
Dexter sounds really cool for a royal. Sort of ... dextrous ... |

Posted - 21/12/2010 : 10:40:36 I have a bad habit of naming things after what's directly in front of me at the time. I have a bushy-nosed plec called "Freeview", A black and white cat called "Fat Boy" (simply because he is). Another cat called "Dribbly". The cats did have normal names once, but I never use them!
My new royal is called Dexter as thats what I was watching when I actually decided to go ahead and buy the viv :) It suits him too. |

Posted - 20/12/2010 : 16:11:51 Ha, more great names - all of those sound pretty creative to me! (I've got room to talk, with a cat called Mouse! )
Glad Sophie and Victoria did their bit for curing phobias ... a friend of mine who's severely phobic was charmed by pics of Figs' Harrison ...sadly we're only in phone contact or she could come and have a go at cuddling Shahi or Saada - I think it's the chunky bodies and what Miss Cat calls 'puppydog eyes'. (I couldn't ask her to cuddle Surahi - that snake cuddles ME! ) |
