Just want to know your thoughts on how bright your snakes are, and your opinion on if they learn stuff.
They must learn to some degree, they get to know that we are not threats, but then they will climb on a branch that they have fallen from 10 time before and still fall off it lol
i mean, if we were to try and "handle" a wild royal in the same way as our pets surely we would be tagged right?

Hmmm, when i started this thread i didnt think that it would cause debate lol but the majority seem to swing with little intelligence and for the most part i completely agree (they cant read or write that we know of :) ). but there must be a level of intelligence in them, and i return to my own original quote on this "if you attempt to handle a wild royal in the same way as a domesticated one surely you would get tagged" based on this i would say that they are at least capable of learning to some degree, which ok they are not gonna get gcse's but it shows some level of intelligence imo.

I could waffle on about brain size and all that but I think the Amy Childs thesis is an accurate and simple to use measure of intelligence. |

I give up lol it would seem that the thread has no more to offer on a sensible level and scrapped the bottom of the barrel I never in a million years would have predicted that a topic about snakes would ever include amy child lmao even though there is a section for other exotic pets on this forum

I thought I'd commented on this one but obviously not. Snakes are evolved not intelligent. Evolution has provided them with some very well adapted senses and they use their assets to the best of their ability, this is not intelligence. Amy Childs uses her assets to the best of her ability, she will survive (and end up on TV for some strange reason) but she is far from intelligent. Snakes do have very basic problem solving ability but only as far as survival is concerned. So is a snake intelligent? No. Is a snake more intelligent than Amy Childs? Probably. |

And you know what it is people say about opinions lmao, but your right and I was trying to make that very point I know that from a human point of view of intelligence they are pretty damn stupid lol, but that's not to say they are stupid they just have a different form of intelligence, which on a basic level I think is amazing (but that's just my opinion lmao) |

Okay you can say the evolution behind a snake is advanced but that's not the same thing as the question of the thread is asking. When asked are snakes smart in the conventional sense then the answer can only be no, they have no capacity for learning, the fact they are born able to do all snakey things goes to prove the point, they have to be born like that because they're incapable of learning. Just my opinion i've only studied as much as I can see in my viv's I don't actually know how a snake braain works. Lol |

That's true Kelf you do have thumbs and you had them the day you were born and could even use them from that moment on, but you were also born with legs but did you know how to walk??? you had the sense of smell but could you follow that smell half a mile to eat dinner?? as I say mentally knowing what to do as is with humans who need to learn to do something by repeating it over and over, and knowing instinctively how to do something ie, genetically are two seperate things so whilst I agree a snake is not intelligent as we interprate intelligence it is very intelligent on a genetic level. |

Snakes as with many other animals are intelligent on a genetic level, rather than a mental one, yes they have a brain the size of a pea, and can't learn things the way we do, but then again from the moment they hatch they are capable of tracking their prey items for vast distances, without their parents teaching them for 10-15 years till they learn. |

Snakes cant be that intelligent, they have a brain the size of a pea lol. Change the layout of their viv around, and they think they are somewhere completely new. Although I think there are definitely levels of intelligence between different types of snake. Some just seem more switched on, as soon as you open the enclosure they are eyeing you up, and you can see the thought process going on in their head. whereas others dont seem interested/bothered. Im affraid I think royal pythons fall into the latter. my royal cant work out why the fake orchid in his viv wont support his weight (that or he just doesnt like it). i might leave a physics text book in his viv, see if he can work it out lol. |

What is intelligence?
Is it living at one with your environment?
Or maybe plundering for gain with no thought for the future, even tho that particular species knows full well the implications.
That doesn't sound too inteligent to me.
Is it when a species lives for millions of years within its means?
I believe mankind as a species lacks basic intelliegence, else why would they rape the planet of resources that take millions of years to replenish, why create weapons that will wipe themseves off the face of the earth?
I can't forget the Nim Project where scientists took a baby chimp and brought him up as a human child. Taught him sign language and eventually when he became a young adulert and grew too strong, sold him. He arrived at a facility where he and other chimps underwent experiments.
After all those years living as a human they reported the experiment a failure as Nim couldn't converse using sentences, only for things he wanted.
So, are snakes intelligent?
I say yes they are, intellient in all ways that matter to a snake:) |

No there is a difference between intelligence and adaptation. They're keen hunters but they're not smart, they aren't capable of learning much. |

i think they are amongst some of the smartest animals in the world personally.
how many other animals ,without an arial view, could track pray for miles? how many could adapt to thrive in every environment known to man including salt water and desert?
and more to the point, without food for a whole season how many can completely shut down their bodily functions including brain activity to survive the winter? these animals havent survived millenia by being "stupid" as you say, infact they are verry intelligent creatures |
