Hi guys my gf is considering getting a hognose nose, and so it falls on me to do the research and bore her with every detail lol,
I came here to ask since i know of a few of you guys on this forum have them and I trust the opinions of people on the forum more than most.
so firstly are there any big differences between the 3 different kinds of hognose, like temperament for instance?
and what kind of prices would they typically be (shop prices)? oh and with them being mildly venomous, would they need any paperwork or anything like that

There is a difference between the different types of hognose as far as their diet is concerned.
The western hognose is the easiest to convert to rat/mouse diet. The eastern and soutern hognose are a lot more resistant staying with its preference to frogs. So, if you are not okay with feeding frogs (they can be hard to find in the winter months) then the western hognose might be a better option for you. |

I think you mean't the fangs but from what I've read (I'm looking into them at the moment) they actually aren't venomous they have toxic saliva, the fangs are not fangs as such (the hollow variety) but are just larger teeth. It was part of the hognose that I wasn't sure about (other than the fact they look like a poop rolled in sand) but after a bit of a read etc I really dont thinks its anything more than mild irratation rather than true envenomation. Plus I have an OBT its more likely to bite and causes severe cramping, swelling and pain so if I can deal with caring for this monster I can deal with anything.

LOL - the old swear filter - yes, don't mention pu$$ycats or c0ckatiels (although cockroaches are allowed, for some reason) and as for sh1tzus ...well!)
Also, when discussing literature, never mention the well-known author, Charles Willyens, to say nothing of Willy Francis ...

If anyone watches snakebytes TV, there is an episode of that about hognose snakes. The guy lets a hognose bite him and nothing happens, just a couple of pin *****s on his finger. The Hognose really has to have a good chew on you to get its fangs in, i think it would struggle in most situations. Its venom is used to burst toads so they cant expand inside them. |

I would think antihistamines wouldn't be fast enough acting to be useful in an emergency situation. I have a nut allergy and I have to carry adrenaline with me in case of anaphylaxis. I'm pretty sure though that there has NEVER been a documented death in the UK due to hognose snake bite. |

dont let it put you off, was only highlighting the fact hoggy bites arent harmless. Hoggies in general are all bluff and brilliant to watch, for instance when we feed the higgy and I go to lift him out of hs tub he chases my finger open mouthed, is his way of telling me Im still in feeding mode and will try to eat you, so we just leave for another 1o mintues or so until he stops chasing my finger then I lift him back home :D |

From my experience they're not really a grumpy snake, they just like to act all tough by hissing, striking with their mouths closed and puffing up when you approach them, but they don't often actually bite, and as soon as you pick them up, even if they've been acting all grumpy, they're as soft as anything. I work with lots of hognoses and ive never come across one to be aggressive enough to actually bite, or to carry on the 'tough guy' show once handled :)
But obviously theres always going to be the exception aha |

hoggie bites are not harmless, so to speak. Firstly the will have to chew down whatever they have hold of being rear fanged if the do get you have a look at this our resident bite expert posted this thread on the rept. I can remember talking to him minutes after the bite and for a good few hours afterwards. It wasnt harmless granted wont do lasting damage but dont fancy having a hog chew on me. There are worse images of hoggie bites out there though.

I was at my local shop yesterday and they were selling hatchling western hoggies for £80. Do you know much about their temperament? If they feel threatened they like to act tough, they get all huffy puffy and flare up their little hood. They also do false strikes (with their mouth shut lol) but their venom is completely harmless, unless you have an allergy....
They can be very grumpy snakes and some people find it off-putting/intimidating, but i think its cute lol. |

nope no difference
and what kind of prices would they typically be (shop prices)?
for a hatchie £60 upwards for western normal and keep going for the morphs into the hundreds
oh and with them being mildly venomous, would they need any paperwork or anything like that
no they dont need paperwork although they are mildly venemous.
