First time in 12 Royals and 2 years of keeping that I've had a snake bleed during shed! Was very upset, gave her a bath and used some cotton buds to remove any stuck bloodied shed.

Had concerns it might be a burn but fairly sure it's not now, just a very bad shed. Missed her turning blue and didn't provide any more humidity, feel awful!

could maybe put some thin bits of wood between the RUB and heatmat just to create a little bit of an air gap
Kelfezond Posted - 15/09/2012 : 10:03:43
Don't have another way of heating her, Chris.
chrisc Posted - 15/09/2012 : 05:59:49
did you try taking her off the heatmat and heating her another way?
AndyJ80 Posted - 14/09/2012 : 13:57:57
awww bless her, looks like she's healing nicely though :)

Update for you with pictures;

Cleo is getting a bit better, still leaking quite a bit of fluid each night but externally it's looking better.

Kelfezond Posted - 09/09/2012 : 10:41:57
Little update.

The medicine we gave her seems to be taking effect internally but externally it still looks pretty awful! Gave her another bath last night and as soon as she hit the water it turned red with blood, poor girl!

I had a very small amount of blood from one of my little females vent during shedding once. I cleaned and dried the area, the bleeding stopped almost immediately. She never suffered from any problems after and it's never happened again.

I'm really glad I use newspaper after reading this! I will have to think about the lining paper idea though as it would certainly look nicer!
reptilemadd Posted - 24/08/2012 : 19:57:57
Yeah chrisc bleeding from the vent when shedding is apparently quite common although more so in corns, I only know this cause it happened to me at the beginning of the year and I paniced as you do lol only to be told as I've said that it is quite common.

Well we've been back to the vets today, looks like this new medicine (can't spell it) is clearing it up but very, very slowly. We're still waiting for the lab results to come back.
badwool Posted - 11/08/2012 : 13:24:44
does it look to be clearing up?
Kelfezond Posted - 11/08/2012 : 13:15:10
Same as always to be honest, just given her some more of her medicine :)
badwool Posted - 11/08/2012 : 12:57:05
I hope so - will keep an eye on him.

Hows cleo looking kelf?
chrisc Posted - 11/08/2012 : 10:27:10
it could just be from were the shed has come away from the vent an bled a little sure ive read about this happening
Kelfezond Posted - 11/08/2012 : 10:06:31
Not good, this shedding lark is becoming scary!
badwool Posted - 10/08/2012 : 20:12:50
you know whats really weird Kelf, I came home today to check on Roger (who was in shed - again) and I removed the sphagnum and perfect shed from his hide and also took him out to admire him, I noticed then the very tip of his tail had a really small blood stain on it.

two of us in the same week with what looks like the same issue.

I have removed all substrate (critter krumble) dissinfected his rub and put nipple cream (its all i had) onto his tail - see how he gets on.
Kelfezond Posted - 10/08/2012 : 12:55:29
Much less likely though, no spot cleaning and hoping it's all okay, instead you just do a fresh whole clean quickly. :)
konrad1982 Posted - 10/08/2012 : 12:43:38
Like you are saying, substrate could make things worse - I agree. But it is like with people - when you catch flue bacteria it doesn't matter if you sleep on the bed, sofa or on the bench - you have that bacteria and if your body is strong enough you will be fine, if not you will have a flue. But when you get a flue you can't just blame your bed. Bacteria could be anywhere in food, water, air, on your hands or substrate itself. All I'm trying to say is - even on newspapers something like this could have happened.
Kelfezond Posted - 10/08/2012 : 12:16:57
The substrate just made the problem worse, can't harbour bacteria in newspaper that's changed every few days :)
konrad1982 Posted - 10/08/2012 : 12:06:48
Well, you can't blame yourself mate. It definitely didn't happen within day or two while on shed. It was probably building up under her old skin for much longer but it was just invisible. If her old skin was stuck into it it may explain bleeding. I'm not even sure if that's caused by a substrate you were using. Maybe it's just a bacteria. If that was the substrate it would probably happen to most of the snakes you've got. I hope she will recover quickly-keep us updated how it goes. Good luck.
Kelfezond Posted - 08/08/2012 : 23:27:31
Aye honestly I think it's a mix of all these things, she had a bad shed I know this much as I missed blue, it probably tore a scale and bled a little letting infection set in.
