Hi Guys, I went out to get some mice this morning and came home with a gorgeous infant female. She's about 3 months old and looks lovely. However I haven't had a new snake, much less an infant for some time now and am wondering how long to leave her before trying to feed? Her record shows she's eaten pretty much weekly since she was born in may and she's on rat pups.

It is recommended that you allow them a week to settle in before offering a feed. This is a best fit for all snakes as waiting does the ones that will eat straight away no harm but allows the stressed out ones to settle down. Its not the easiest thing to tell off the bat whether you've got a stresser or a confident snake so the weeks settling in suits both.

Congratulations on the new arrival though, hatchling snakes are so cute, and I do think its lovely to watch them growing up and getting to know their habits etc.

In addition to the allowing them a week to settle in its also recommended to leave handling to an absolute minimum until you have had three successful feeds as this is the big thumbs up from the thumbless animal that things are good.

I always offer the day I get them home

It depends on whether they are displaying signs of being settled, with Sid it was day 3 I fed him. With Hydra my corn snake it was day 8
