Bathe your snakes first and oil down (I use olive oil) to get rid of the adults then keep the hypo's moist and let them do their job, they will eat the eggs aso long as you can keep them alive, I have been able to treat all my new arrivals with mites successfully this way, but remember that you need to isolate a new arrival for at least 6-8 weeks until you know they are clear that way you don't introduce mites or infections to your established clean stock. good luck and I hope your snakes are mite free soon

Myoaspis arrived today and are all portioned out in individual tubs within the snake rubs. See how this goes

Oh yeukk! Will keep close eye out for those critters but fingers crossed I dont get to see any

you will see little black dots moving about in the viv and on the snake also the snake will probably spend a lot of time soaking in their water bowl and there will be dead mites floating in the water

dumb question here.....but exactly how can you tell if yer herp has mites?????
chrisc Posted - 28/09/2012 : 16:48:20
hope you get shot of them soon have read about these predator mites and really like the idea.

yes covering them in olive oil while their in a shed cycle could cause problems as they start shedding to get the oil off so best to wait until they have finished shedding

I would definatley recommend front line or callingtons it's the only product I know which is effective. However one of my snakes had mites a few months back after a spell in a boarding place while I was away. To get rid I bathed him in water with a few drops of olive oil, whislt cleaning his viv completely with front line spray.
Left it to air until the smell had gone. once out of the bath I could see all the mites had died as he is albino is was easy to spot, then wiped him over with front line everywhere, then put him on kitchen towel for a month and repeated the process.
Visable mites where gone within 3-4 days just dropping out of his scales as he dried out. It seemed to bring on an early shed which helped alot . He has been mite free now since :) happy days .

I have a spare rub in my rack so I'm going to have that as predator hq. Then they can travel from the top all over the rack.

We have tried mite off then frontline which seemed to do the trick for Eowyn, however we spotted a couple of mites last night. She has just passed the blue phase, so I believe we can't try olive oil at this point. Am going to order some hypoaspis mites today as well. !#*#!+&$*# mites.
