Hi there,

Lexi had her first shed with me today. It came off in 3 pieces. I checked the shed for eye caps n saw them attached in it... Ive had her out and checked her too... eyes, nose and vents, tail tip and bottom. All is fine apart from a small piece of shed at the end of the slit of her bum (not sure of the proper name). So I thought to maybe aid this away I got a warm damp towel for her to slither through... This has not removed it. But it did make her need the biggest all mighty poo I have ever seen. What I saw worried me at the time but please tell me If this is normal - the tail but above her bum swelled a lot and a round pink ball of insides appeared, I thought she had prolapsed.... But after she released the huge amount of poo and unrates she was storing this all went back away and appears normal again. It looked like she was being popped (going from the vids of popping I have viewed. There were two claw like bits either side of the round pink bit).

I have been studying that area for a few moments to also notice the other side of the slit (from the bit of ret shed) it looks like a scale is missing!

I changed the paper in her tub to find the smallest drops of blood on her paper towel substrate. I also discovered a brown sticky trail of god knows what on her wooden log hide. Im positive this is not poo.... So may it be blood? It's brown ad very sticky. Maybe she cut herself on the wood when shedding? I've removed it. Is there any other possible reason considering all I have mentioned?

She seems happy enough in herself apart from trying to hide her bum after I kept trying to look! think she got a bit fed up of it!

Sorry for such a long post.... Im hoping the bum issue is normal and not a prolapse? And any advise on the stuck shed and missing scale in the hum area would be so much appreciated.

Thank you for reading all of this :D

Haha! Turn himself inside out! I think I agree on that one.... Cats make way less poopy!

Well humidity is raised. It's still there but shes happy enough and had her dinner tonight so when it's gone down in a few days I'll see if it's gone. I'm sure it won't be there long as its not a lot.

Thanks for the help guys. :D

First time I saw this with Boris I thought he was going to turn himself inside out! Like Lotabob says, it all goes back in again. As for the poo, Ive had smaller in my litter tray! (not mine obviously, the cat's!)

These snakes do like to worry us. If your king snake passed Gorilla limbs like Royals do, you'd see a lot more going on back there too. It's not so much coming out as opening up while the less flexible bits don't. It's not something you'll see very often if at all again so I'd not worry about it.

A few days of increased humidity without making the floor wet will shift any stuck bits of shed and in the odd chance it doesn't the next shed will shift it.

Hi Lotabob, thanks for all the info. Does the cloaca come out every time they poo? I don't think I've ever seen my royal poo before today. I've seen my kingsnake poo and it's never happened to him that I've notice.
Thank you for putting my mind at ease on this. I'll get the humidity back up then, at least I know it's not in the way of her passing anything so all is good with the shed thankfully :D I'm so relieved that she isn't injured or anything! Don't think i'd have slept tonight! xx

It sounds like you have just witnessed the shocking stretch of a snakes cloaca, also known as a vent or just it's arse lol. When the scales stretch out the way it looks vile and pink but if everything tucks away after then its all good and normal. It is very common for them to bleed a little from the vent when they shed, my corn snake actually leaves blood on the shed skin too in that area, it's not much and shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't worry about brown goo either, they can produce all matter of matter from their rear, it's probably just something it's pooped out.

The eye caps and tail tip are the important bits to make sure they are off, everything else is aesthetic, if you keep the humidity up a few extra days any leftover bits of skin should work their way off, if not don't worry, next time he sheds it will come off. If its the very edge of the vent then it may just be the edge of cloacal scale, scales are clear or as near as and the very edge does slightly stand proud, specially after a poo with a death defying radius.
