Posted - 25/04/2013 : 13:11:33 Really upset coz another of my snakes has been found dead and I really cant see what the problem was. My pastel had gone off food for about a month but was looking fine. Temps were all settled and as they should be and there was no sign of anything wrong at all. Last week I tried him on a weaner but he wasnt interested. Monday I put a weaner near him and although he came out from his hide to have a look, he didnt make any attemp to strike, so I left the weaner with him overnight. Next morning I was horrified to find that the weaner appeared to have been swallowed then reguritated, and my beautiful morph was belly side up on his hide, dead. I paid quite a bit for him last year and cannot now afford to replace him, but I just cannot fathom out what could have happened! I am wondering it anyone else has had this experience? Is it at all possible that the weaner was too big for him and could that have caused it???? The rat was no wider than my snake, though when I found it the next morning it did seem to have stretched if that is at all possible!!! I am well fed up! |

Posted - 18/05/2013 : 12:55:08 really sorry to hear this tiggy. wouldn't have thought a regurge would have caused the snake to die, as other's have said get a pm done an hopefully you can find out what caused it |

Posted - 26/04/2013 : 01:55:21 Maybe the rat just got regurgitated on/around time of death.all that stuff is normal for a rat thats been eaten etc.
Its not likely the rat caused the death,by being the size you say.Or unlikely infected or something.Maybe it was just a sudden death due to whichever reason
You will never no unless you get a pm done. |

Posted - 26/04/2013 : 01:08:36 Thanks for the sympathy guys, really appreciated but I am truly gutted to say the least. My snake that died at the start of last year was my elderly Sinaloan (if thats how you spell it!), was upset but he developed some sort of a tumour so at least I knew what went wrong there. This latest upset was totally out of the blue. Had him in a 2.5ft viv with heat lamp, pulse proportional thermostat, temps set at 80 at one end and 88 at other, three hides, aspen substrate and thermometers at each end. Weaner was from a local shop I normally gget my snakie grub from and was warmed by means of an airtight box put on top of the viv for a few hours so it was thoroughly defrosted and warm. When I discovered the disaster, the regurged rat wasnt puffed up, but sort of "squeezed out"looking. Mnemeth had a weaner from the same place and thawed in the same way, and she is fine. Would love to get another pastel, but sort of put off now |

Posted - 25/04/2013 : 22:32:56 I'm sorry to hear you've lost another snake. I don't think any forum could offer you an explanation as to what went wrong and it would be wrong of us to try unless it was something obvious with your set up. Your best chance of finding out what has happened is to arrange a PM with your vet. If you want to run over the details of your setup then post as much info as you can think of, temperatures, heating method, measurement method etc. |

Posted - 25/04/2013 : 20:08:41 Oh Tiggy that's so sad. The rat appearing larger suggests it's puffed up. Does it look like it's about to explode? The heat can do this to the rat but so can nasty bugs etc. I'm sorry I'm not much help. Maybe our members with more experience can offer more ideas. |

Posted - 25/04/2013 : 13:43:48 Could the rat have been infected in some way? How did you prepare the rat for feeding? |
