Posted - 21/12/2009 : 10:26:47 Hi there. I was close to doing the same as you have. I was also told by someone very trusted, that a heat mat on it's own would be fine. So for 3 months since I got my little girl, the heat mat has been almost constantly on. And by checking it yesterday, I discovered it had burnt/melted plastic. Luckily, very very luckily my snake was unharmed, and I feel terrible for you that your Royal has been burnt :( But I'm sure with the right care, and love (which you obviously have a lot for him) he will be fine. But I also came straight on here for advice, and have been told I need a Mat Stat. Everyone on here knows what they're talking about and is very helpful, so trust their advice, as I will. And I truly do hope your little boy is better soon. Charlotte x |

Posted - 17/12/2009 : 13:21:00 as above really mate, like cat said dont beat yourself up over it, you thought (and was told) you were doing the right thing, the fact your here asking for help shows your a responsible owner and never be afraid to ask for help, thats why the forum is here |

Posted - 16/12/2009 : 23:07:31 firstly, don't panic, I was in a very similar position to you not so long ago. Yes, you are (in a way)at fault.( though i realise you followed the advice of someone you trusted...as did i) No you can't do anything to change what has already happened, so swallow any guilt you are feeling and now just try to do the best thing possible for your snake. (And I do mean that in the nicest possible way. If you are anything like me, I was absolutely bricking myself when I made my first post on here.) 1) Get it to a REPTILE/HERP vet as soon as possible. 2) Sort your set up out so that you have a thermostat at the very least. They aren't all that cheap i know and at this time of year money can be a stress, look on ebay, you might find something good. For use with a heat mat you will need a mat stat though i believe pulse stats can be used with mats too...(correct me if i'm wrong, anyone?) 3) Though it is not necessary, to get extra help from people on here, you might find it helpful to post up some pictures (if possible) of your royal, its burns and it's set up. As well as detailing the set up i.e dimentions, type, how you were/are measuring temps etc etc and the feeding/health history of your royal. I hope you get the happy ending I did. best wishes. Cat. |

Posted - 16/12/2009 : 22:25:31 Have you got a photo of it? A heat mat can get very hot if not on a thermostat so a burn is likly.
If he has been burnt, get him to a rep vet. |
