Today Odin started stargazing, he's been off his food but only for a week (since last tuesday as that's when he wouldn't feed). He sounded a bit crackly, and his skin seemed to be a bit saggy so I thought that perhaps he was dehydrated so whenever I change his water I'll put him it in, and I've seen him drink when I've done that. But I had him out a moment ago and he's badly stargazing, I think it may be IBD =[ I'm really upset about the idea of losing him, he's only a snake but I'm still crying about it.

I didn't know I needed a completely different stat for a mat or bulb, he had a mat with the habistat anyway. I don't think he overheated as the temp in his hot end wasn't too high, if anything it was a tad cooler than needed.
Blackecho Posted - 20/06/2010 : 23:17:42
You need a Dimming stat for a bulb and a mat stat for a heat mat. IBD is very rare in this country, my best guess would be some sort of neurological problem caused by over-heating. However, we will never know for sure.
Scarlett Posted - 20/06/2010 : 21:54:50
Lee - The mat never seemed to get hotter than 28C, I do have a digital thermometer at the hot end with it. The lamp in the bottom has a stat to control it, but it just turns the lamp on and off to maintain the temp. I don't think the stats are just for mats, it doesn't state that it's just a mat stat.

Thank you Spor, I may go in and let them know. I'd had him for about 5 months, and then he suddenly turned this week. It was sudden, and seemed happy and active up until this week. I'm not sure about getting another Royal, maybe in a little while or once I've moved out. When I do I'll get you guys to give me the in's and out's on how to make the viv tip top.

so sorry to hear that he has passed away. let us know if you do plan to get another royal. and we'll help get your set up all right before your snake moves in with you. it may have been an IBD but as BE said that could only have been confirmed by PM but as you can see from the list i posted there are other things it could have been as well.
it would probably be worth just getting in touch with the store you got hin from let them know what has happened and ask them if they have had any occurances recently of IBD. if you can go in in person rather than phone it would be better.

again so sorry for your loss.

so sorry to hear that,im a bit confussed, did you have a mat stat on a lamp and no stat on the mat?
Scarlett Posted - 20/06/2010 : 20:44:59
Thank you Hodgie, that's also a good idea. I was waiting for my step dad to make something to create a space for them anyway, as the viv on top is slightly off the edge of the other one because the fixture for the light is sticking out of the top of the bottom tank. Like most things in our house he has yet to do it, I'll have to keep asking.

but the issue I have is that his viv is stacked on top of my Corn's viv, so when I have her heat lamp on it makes his viv warm so I end up having to turn his mat off.

I made small spacers for my vivs just to allow the air to circulate.
Sorry to hear of your loss.

Should I warn them just in case? He deteriorated extremely quickly, so it's possible it might have been IBD couldn't it?

Also the habistat does control the temp, it turns on and off to maintain it which is annoying when attached to a lamp as it'd be nice to have it on all the time rather having it going on and off, but hey ho.

Sorry for your loss, also sorry to hear he's now buried, if it was IBD (confirmed by PM) it'd have been good to let any shop/breeder you've been in contact with recently and bought him from know.
Scarlett Posted - 20/06/2010 : 19:08:41
Just an update; Odin passed away in the last couple of hours. He's now buried beneath our willow tree, I'm distraught and can't help but blame myself, but at least he went quickly.

Thank you to everyone who helped me, it means alot.
Blackecho Posted - 20/06/2010 : 16:17:20
So you haven't got a thermostat?
Scarlett Posted - 20/06/2010 : 14:41:10
Lee - I'm not, and I didn't know you could pay gradually. Perhaps I'll register with the reptile vet I found near me.

Blackecho - Because of the warm weather I'd had to turn off his heat mat, as it was gradually making the entire viv warmer than I felt good for him. At the moment he's got a heat mat at one end at an average of 28C, which I just realised is a little cool, but the issue I have is that his viv is stacked on top of my Corn's viv, so when I have her heat lamp on it makes his viv warm so I end up having to turn his mat off.

most vets will give you time to pay,are you registered with a vet?

What are the temperatures in your viv like? How are they measured and how are they controlled?
