Posted - 27/03/2009 : 20:11:41 Well, she's been for a checkup today and as it turned out she had an obstruction. The vet could feel a lump just before her bum, so she took her out the back and flushed her out. The end result was a load of snake poo, two urates balls about the size of my thumbnail and a couple of stones! God knows where the stones came from, we've only had her on beech chips, but they're out now.
Other than that she's been given a clean bill of health and the vet seemed happy with how we were keeping her. The vet listened to her breathing and checked her mouth and everything seemed fine, so she thinks that the noise might well have been caused by Princess being in discomfort because she couldn't poo, or simply hissing a bit. The vet said that she'd probably poo again in the next few days, so we've got that to look forward to.
It's good to know that she's healthy though, I'm glad we took her to get checked over and will be doing regularly in future. |

Posted - 04/04/2009 : 10:16:43 Well done Chris, odd vet though, glad that once you'd pointed out that there was nothing in her that waiting for poo was odd she realised. |

Posted - 04/04/2009 : 00:30:14 Well, this evening I offered her a small rat and she struck almost immediately and scoffed it. I got four small rats not much bigger than the large mice that she'd been on because I didn't want to over face her with prey too different to what she was used to. Seeing as how she took that one happily I'll get some bigger ones next time.
I thought royals were supposed to be picky eaters? |

Posted - 03/04/2009 : 10:11:14 The vet's called back. I explained that Princess has yet to poo, but that she's been active and roaming around looking for food. She said that if she seemed fine in herself then she was happy for us to start feeding again, but to keep an eye on her, check her for lumps and bring her back in if there are any problems.
I did ask why she'd said not to feed her until she'd pooed, and she said that she'd always been taught that with snakes it was best not to feed if nothing was coming out to avoid impaction. She did agree that if she'd emptied Princess when she was flushed out then she wasn't going to poo.
I'll be offering her a rat this evening. :-) |

Posted - 01/04/2009 : 12:29:24 I don't know if she's a reptile specialist per se, but she does specialise in exotic pets and keeps reptiles herself. She didn't say why to wait, and I should have asked but didn't. I assume it was to check to see if she was pooing naturally.
My thinking was along the same lines as yours BE, but thought I'd check on here to see what you experienced people thought. |

Posted - 01/04/2009 : 12:06:49 Specialist Reptile Vet?
Did they say why to wait?
Royals can go a month or two without pooing and if they're empty, you'll probably be waiting a long time! |

Posted - 01/04/2009 : 11:21:36 Thanks for all the help guys. I pass The Ark on my way home from work, in fact I'm planning to stop there this evening and get a couple of rats for her to try as from what I've read she's too big to be on mice.
Speaking of feeding, the vet said that we shouldn't feed her until after she's pooed. It was last Friday that we had her in and thus far she has not left us anything. It's eleven days since her last feed so she's due another, and while I know they can go ages without food I don't like to think that she's hungry.
I'm planning to ring the vet to check, but the thought occurs that if she was emptied when she had her bum flushed then surely she's not going to poo until after she's eaten? |

Posted - 30/03/2009 : 23:29:55 The Ark on wigton road is by far the best in carlisle for livestock, although I have found his prices for equipment to be a bit on the steep side, for equipment I choose to go to Nu Pets on lowther street in the city centre. This is just my opinion, but both shops are very good and have a fair knowledge with royal's and other rep's. Hope this helps chris, Scott. |

Posted - 30/03/2009 : 22:57:03 Hi Scott, Carlisle is my nearest large town! Please could you let me know which is the good specialised shop, and which is the OK one? I won't ask about the no-go, a lot of forums don't seem to like you posting negative reviews.

If you mean p.p. from the dark side, I haven't bought from her but I do believe that she has a good reputation.
Whereabouts in cumbria you from chris, there are 3 shops in carlisle, 1 a defo no-go, one ok and one a good specialized rep shop. If you know carlisle then go see adam at The Ark. Don't worry about his appearance, he knows a fair bit and carry's a fair amount of live stock, ( not all rep's, but all exotic's ). Hope this helps, scott

Posted - 30/03/2009 : 17:55:43 I don't know Appleby, but Penrith's only about 30 miles from me so if it's near there it'd certainly be close enough to have a trip to! Thanks.
