Okay, So I got my new temp probes today, so i now have 5 in my royals glass viv (overkill maybe)

I have as anyone who has read my last few posts got a large exo terra glass mesh topped viv with a heat mat under repti carpet then a thin layer of aspen over this in his hide - thicker aspen elsewhere.

The set up looks fine - I had been toying with a CHE sitting on the mesh of the tank but had seen so many negative reviews regarding CHE's so didnt get one yet. Of course i was going to use a guarded CHE as to avoid any misshaps.

Anyway to my point. Now i have extra probes in there:

Temp 1: Probe attached to heat mat below thin substrate and carpet is statted to fluctuate between 30-31c I am happy with this.

Temp 2: 2-3 inches above his warm side hide 19.1c currently

Temp 3 center of tank about an inch in 17.1

Temp 4 far cool side 6 or 8 inches above water dish and 2-3 inches in from the glass 16.4

Now its freezing in Newcastle at the minute and I wanted to get some ideas as to wether this kind of gradient is ok, I have only had him 2 weeks and he's fed once with me, loves been out of the tank and loves attention. He is lazy through the day which i believe to be normal, and spends most of the day time in the warm hide.

Have seen him drink 2 times already, which i gather is a rarity.

Only thing he hasnt dont is poop since i got him (fed last sunday on small rat).

ANy advice more than welcome.

Also its worth pointing out that for privacy I have covered 3 sides of the tank with tank backing to make it more enclosed so he can get privacy, and the entry of his hide points into the tank and not out of the tank, again for privacy.

I am learning on the job here and have already massively changed the setup he arrived in (which included the glass tank).

Thanks, and sorry for the length of the Post.

There are some pics of my tank set up on my other posts on facebook :) But I will upload some here

I wouldn't place anything on top of the mesh,As you have all the plastic around it to.Plus the mesh on them is super thin.Could/can get super hot if a ceramic is used. You could place as bulb on top in a dome for the day,as a backup to the mat :) And turn it off at night.

You can buy smaller ones too for bedrooms etc.

If you have a small room and a low wattage setting on the heater to boost room temp to 20° probably a few quid at most per week, for comparison my electric each week for whole house is £20-25 per week for whole house and that's my rad keeping my rep room which is a large dinning room around 25-26°c at the minute plus heat sources for 17 snakes and 2 gecko vivs and a beardie viv and the usual household appliances
Tony1983 Posted - 01/02/2014 : 15:45:01
That looks like a decent little heater, what are they like on the old electric consumption though?

Aye that's the one, this is what i mean by oil filled rad http://www.argos.co.uk/m/static/Product/partNumber/4154017/Trail/searchtext%3EOIL+FILLED+RADIATOR.htm

i got mine from B&Q and it has a digital built in stat

You mean something like this? http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=24297
Can you link me what you mean by the radiator? :)please
carlb1981 Posted - 01/02/2014 : 15:24:19
Yeah im from newcastle too, not an oil lamp its a plug in oil filled radiator if your room is small it wouldn't cost much to heat i have my bulb for gecko resting on top of mesh but with your snake being able to reach the top exo terra do a proper lamp holder to hang lamp above mesh
Tony1983 Posted - 01/02/2014 : 15:10:55
I cant quite fathom out the best way to have a lamp over the mesh. any ideas? and the oil lamp? how does that work? how much does it cost to run? and he's in my room, and its baltic here atm :/

I agree its bloody freezing up here lol id increase your heat mat to fluctuate 32-33°c and is he in your living room? The ambient temps in tank need to be higher than that so if you can heat the room he's in to raise temps would be better than having heating on in whole house. i use an oil filled rad in my rep room its between 23-26°c in mine but you wouldn't need to go that high maybe if you could get it to 20° it would be easier to keep heat in tank id also suggest using a heat bulb supported above the mesh as that will heat the air in the tank rather than relying on the mat as they are useless for raising temps. as for helping keep heat in the glass tank try using polystyrene sheets on the 3 sides you've covered to help insulate and cover part of the mesh to help stop heat escaping.
