It could be either without a proper diagnosis unfortunately, I would suggest cleaning out the whole viv and baking the log in an oven for a couple of hours to kill anything off.
Also, until you are sure, use kitchen towel for substrate, easy to see anything and also not a source of anything nasty.
Get a fecal sample to a Reptile vet asap.
Good luck. |

If you have not saved the last one some Royals can go weeks between poos so I would suggest taking the snake. |

i agree with BE. my royals can go upto 6 weeks between poops so i would go seek advice sooner.
it my just be parasites off of the wood but you cant be too careful. |

Most of the books / websites that I've read about Royal parasites have said that the internal parasites are Protazoans. These are microscopic, single-celled organisms that can't be seen clearly with the naked eye. I would suggest that they are either from the wood, substrate or the external surface of your royal.
I would still take it to the vets to be on the safe side though.
Keep us posted
Edit: How big compared to a pin head were the little buggers? |

Paul's our Biology expert so hopefully he's right and giving the viv a good clean and baking the log and any substrate will do it, but I'd still get it checked if I were you. |

'green critters crawling all over' doesn't sound like internal parasites to me............. would generally have to have a huge parasite burden for it to be passing lots of wrigglies with faeces. you can treat for worms with Panacur 2.5% (available from vets, GOOD shops and online) but i'll have to check on the dosage, can't remember off the top of my head |

Were they smaller than a pin head?
Were they like little spiders?
Did they walk (i.e. in a straight-ish line) or were they wriggling around randomly?
If you can give me a rough description I may be able to put your mind at rest.
p.s. What kind of wood is it (pine, spruce, etc)?
Where did you get the wood from? |

hi all. thanks for all the advice i thought the internet was only any good for playin poker i didnt relise it would be this handy. the little buggers were about the same size as a full stop they wernt wriggling around they was walking. not really sure what kind of wood it is but its been baked and ive layed down some kitchen towl as a substrate no sign of the little buggers yet. i will be takein him to the vet over the weekend just to be on the safe side. he seems fairly happy in himself and has just taken a feed which i hope is a good sign. i found another poo this eve in his viv i gave it the once over but no sign of em fingers crossed.
where do you all get your flashy banners from? |

Hi Scott. They sound like Spider Mites. The reason for asking about the type of wood is that there is one species of spider mite that likes conifers. These particular mites come in red, creamy with green dots and plain green. Sounds like them to me. Mites are like the Royal Marines of the arthropod world and are pretty hard to kill. Do you have any indoor plants in the house? If you have, you'll probably find they've migrated there.
Good luck at the vets. |
