Hello, I have just joined the forum as I am looking at buying a really nice Royal Python. I live in the Portsmouth area and would like to know if there are any reliable places to purchase a quality Royal from.
I thought of a Corn snake to start with, but the shape of the head and the markings on the Royal are in my opinion so much better.Sorry if I have upset any Corn owners.
Any tips and ideas on where to buy from would be very greatful. I am not in a rush as I want to ensure that I get everything right for my new mate. Colin.

There are a few people from Portsmouth on here, I'm sure one will be able to point you in the right direction. |

Thank you for your replies. It is always good to know that there are people out there to help. Like I said, I want to make sure that I know what is involved in the keeping of a Royal and therefore do not want to rush things. I have already visited many internet sites and read up on various `care guides` etc. Hopefully, I will soon have my own Royal whom I can care for. |

hello and welcome .
There are a few of us on here that regularly haunt Emsworth Aquaria in Drayton. I got Sherman from there Slightly more expensive but very experienced staff.

Where abouts in Portsmouth are you? If you're within walking distance of North End then the number 23 bus stops almost outside the shop. |

Hi Colin, welcome to the forum, be careful Royals are addictive but oh so beautiful. |

Thanks Mulv, I have been in there and it looks a very good place. I am off to Romsey later today to see a breeder who belongs to the Portsmouth Reptile and Amphibian Society. |

If he doesn't mind, I'd quite like his details, I don't know any breeders yet. If you don't mind obviously lol.

I got back about half hour ago from his place and he has some great snakes. Hs name is John Searl and has a web site called `DJ Reptiles`. He had one natural Royal left and I have asked him to hold onto it for me until I get a vivarium sorted out.She is beautiful.
She seemed a bit nervous to start with and hissed a couple of times, but soon got used to me and I to her. John is a great guy and I could have stayed there all night just listening to him. He is a wealth of knowledge.

Queenie used to hiss at me but i used to pick him up anyway so he soon stopped it. with a new snake i'd want to be certain it was a hiss rather than a wheeze that could indicate an RI (respiratory infection). the corn i rehomed before christmas pparently used to hiss a lot...................... turned out it was a chronic low-grade RI! |

I am sure that it was a hiss as she did it about twice straight after I picked her up. I was holding her for ages and did not hear anything else.
Thanks for your tip as it will be worth knowing. John Searle is very well known and travels all over the country, so I would be very surprised if he was not telling me everything.
I know that you did not mean anything like that, but I suppose there are a few breeders out there who just do it for the money and not for the love of it. Bit like `puppy farms` etc. |

Sherman used to hiss at me before I got him out of his viv when I first got him. He soon stopped when he realised that it didn't make a blind bit of difference and was coming out anyway .
Just been looking at the website. He's got some nice reps there Colin. Very tempted by the pair of 100% het pieds for £450, but I think Jo would divorce me if I started breeding royals .
What's the going rate for a visible pied at the moment? Might be able to use that as ammunition to off-set the divorce risk . |

Hi Paul, yes he has some great reps. Not sure how much he wants for the pied, but it would be worth giving him a ring.
He showed me a double headed house snake which was quite weird. Both heads take food as well.
I am off out today to invest in a viv and hopefully tomorrow I will be collecting the Royal from him.
Any tips for the first few days ? |

Just leave him be for 5 - 7 days to get used to his new home. I'd also get the viv up and running today to let the temperatures level off. Good luck . |
