Hi Guys well as the title says I think I might have made a huge mistake, Ariadne started shedding the other day, and when I noticed she'd gone blue I put a damp moss hide in for her, but also I recently changed her hide which only just fitted under her heat lamp, and since she has never had what I would call a bad shed it was a huge shock to find that this time all she has managed to shed was the tip of her nose, so everything from her eye caps back is still attached.
I can only assume that because her new hide was so close to her heat source it's gotten a little to hot in there and lowered the humidity, so I've just given her a warm soak, and cause we had no cooking/ veg oil in I used some baby oil, and it's fair to say the little girl did not like the taste of it, so my question is have I made a huge mistake by putting baby oil in her bath, and what's the best way to deal with her eye caps????????? |

I know baby oil can help 'suffocate' mites, so I would say it's not harmful. As for the eye caps, you can leave them until her next shed (which is what I personally would do).
I know this is not the same due to different species, I've had to remove contact lenses from patients eyes which have either dried on, created a vacuum, or slid around the eye, and it's not easy even with a whole host of medical equipment at my disposal so I wouldn't even attempt it at home, and definitely not with a snake who's eyes are a hell of a lot smaller (just my personal opinion) |

Baby oil is not for consumption (Hydrocarbon liquids (liquids made from petroleum) are poisonous. They include gasoline, kerosene, charcoal lighter fluid, paint thinner, baby oil, lamp oil, and furniture polish. If hydrocarbons are swallowed, they can easily get into the lungs. Even a small amount can cause breathing problems. The liquid coats the inside of the lungs. That prevents oxygen from entering the blood stream).
There is no need for any oils to help a stuck shed, water will be more than adequate, in all likeliness oil would probably make things worse rather than better providing a lubricated surface over the stuck shed reducing the friction required to remove it.
The pillowcase trick is still in my opinion the best way to get stuck shed off quickly and without any major disruption. You wet a pillowcase, wring it out so its just damp, stick the snake in it for 20-30 minutes. While the snake is in there prep the viv with a few damp face cloths to raise humidity and then stick the snake back, no pulling at it, rubbing at it etc just straight back, the shed should come off in all but the most stubborn stuck bits. I did this with Duke, he had a terrible shed only got a tiny bit of his skin off, did this and by the end of the day he had got all the shed off himself. |

I agree with lotabob, the pillow case method works really well just used it recently myself , left him in there for about 20mins opened it up and everything was stuck to the sides eyecaps included.

All valid points I suppose but checked on her an hour ago and she seems to have shed fully but will wait till tomorrow to check fully and unfortunately she did swallow some and pulled the mother of all faces when she did, but since they close their windpipe off while swallowing hopefully she wont have gotten any in her lungs, and it's a silly mistake I will not be repeating..... |
