Hey guys, need a little assistance! Trying to find a picture of a melted RUB due to heat mat problems - trying to show a friend but I'm having a real dumb moment with inability to find images.
Anyone got some? (We all know they're out there!) |

Should add there was no problem with the heat mat it wasnt faulty it worked as it was supposed to  the problem was no stat |

| Can a heat mat really melt a rub?!?!? Surely it would need to get to over 100 degrees C? I use wood vivs with ceramic bulbs, so no experience but that seems damn hot!!! |

As well as the danger of unstatted heat mats there is also another way heat mats can be dangerous if not used properly or in the right circumstances. Thermal blocking is a very real and terrifying possibility with heat mats. Its not so likely with a thermostat but it can still happen on a section of the mat not near the thermostat probe. This is why we don't use heat mats inside vivariums for large bodied snakes.
My understanding of thermal blocking is the electricity into the heat mat is energy the mat just converts that energy to heat, the heat then disperses into the air and surrounding objects. Wood is an insulator (as are a lot of materials) so that effectively reduces the amount of heat that can disperse into that material so it has to go the other way. Stick a big snake onto that mat, the snake will absorb the heat but not as fast as the energy is been converted to heat causing the mat in the area the snake is sitting to increase in temperature, if there is no thermostat probe under the snake then the thermostat is effectively clueless to the increase in temperature so there is a real risk the mat could get to a temperature hot enough to burn the snake. |

This has just scared to poo out of me I'll be buying two 3foot viv's dimmer stats and guards now I've seen that.
I will add my heat pads are stated but after seeing that I'll never be using heat pads again |

| Don't let it frighten you too much these are still rare cases and I'm sure 99.99% of them are user's faults (like not statting them, overloading the sockets or setting them up incorrectly) |
