Yeah ok so i'm bored and as Kelf said on a previous thread, mention a Spider and bound to bring on a debate
I had always said I wouldn't have one..and yep I bought a girl lol
All my favourite morphs contain the spider gene, so lets have it hehe

| I actually like the spider morph and all the combos it makes, the only reason I wouldn't have one is that everyone who breeds them knows it has a genetic defect (head wobble) and whilst in some cases this can be very mild, in some it's very severe. So I personally think that knowingly breeding an animal with a genetic flaw just for our vanity (cause it looks nice) is wrong...... |

I personally never trust anything with more than 2 eyes....oh sorry not that kind of spider
I like you said I would never have a spider because of the wobble (not cos I saw it as a defect, but I'd feel helpless), now I have a black bee but have been very lucky with her as her wobble varies from virtually none (think Kaa hypnotising mowgli) to mild when she feeds.
I personally don't see a problem but as I said, I'm very lucky with my girl.

As far as research has uncovered it seems to be distressing for the owner rather than for the snake. It seems to be mainly when excited meal times..am I right?
Going off snakes for a moment, all the breeds of dogs..Cavaliers for example have been bred by intense inbreeding and many suffer for it..Cavs are bred to have a domed head, but this cause the brain to be compressed so most blink..severe head ache. Boxers, Pugs almost all.

I've seen some train wrecks...but I own a Bee and Spider - both of which have a mild wobble.

i agree with reptilemadd. they are lovely looking morphs and so are the combos but as above i don't agree with breeding an animal that is known to have a genetic defect |

As JanieW said....inbreeding has caused major flaws in dogs and cats....to name a few defects
Cavaliers, as above & mitral valve disease
Dalmation, immune diseases
German Shepherds and Labs, hip dysplasia
etc etc
Rightly or wrongly, it happens and will continue to happen |

I have a female bumblebee - I'll breed her until I encounter something that makes me not want to breed her.
I find with debates like this where there is no clear favoured side the best approach is to rely on your own experiences - I try to remain impartial on things like this - if one day I hatch a spider with such a wobble that I personally believe the snake is having a poor quality of life I'll stop. |

| I love the spider morph and all the differents morphs it can make I think as long as the snake eats sheds and goes to the toilet well then there is no reason it can't live a normal life. Its like with humans some couple have kids knowing that there is a high risk they could have a disability but as long as they get all the care they need they can still live life to the full just might be a bit harder than those who aren't disabled |

| These debates are great cause it shows that we don't all think alike but to say that it's ok to breed spider morphs cause they do it with pedigree dogs and cats, seems a little sad because it's all for our vanity and of course the chance to make money, IMO the quality of life shouldn't be brought into it simply because they are unable to communicate and tell use what there "quality" of life is like. On the other end of the scale we don't think twice about putting an animal to sleep if it becomes terminally ill or has a bad accident, because there quality of life would be bad, yet we do everything possible to keep humans alive even if they are unable to move or talk or do anything for themselves. I'm not a "believer" but the sooner we stop playing god the better all quality of life will be, animal and human..... |

That's a valid point Rep, apart from the Spider morphs..as the Spider head wobble occurred in the original wild caught speciman.
Pedigree dogs aren't found in the wild, they are purely man made for want of a better term, and that imo is wrong.
As if that weren't enough, docking of tails, cutting ears to points ie just cruel, thankfully banned in this country now.
Really when you really stop and think, the woes of the planet are caused by man, that's a depressing thought. |

I'm not a huge fan of how quickly people throw the "put to sleep" option out whenever an animal is in pain or has a lesser quality of life.
A friend of mine named Dave Clemens owns and runs the Luton reptile rescue - they put a video up a few days back (I shared it on my facebook channel) showing some of the good work they do - one specific case was an iguana named Elvis. They found him completely dehydrated, had a severe case of metabolic bone diesease and was extremely underweight, he was in such a condition as to be unable to move any of his body himself, he couldn't eat by himself he was in effect a vegetable - The RSPCA were involved in the rescue along with Dave and their words to him were essentially if he wouldn't take the Iggy himself it would be their proceedure to put it to sleep due to the situation it was in (which I know alot of people would also advise if you took that problem to the forums) yet 1 year later thanks to alot of intense treatment from Dave the iggy is in great condition has all it's muscle back, moves around and feeds itself perfectly well.
Sorry for the off-topic tangent there but thought it was quite relevent to the whole playing god thing. |
