Hi Peeps, I bought my Royal on the 5th of Feb, she had been fed on the 2nd. So I really didn't expect her to eat for at least a week while she settled in, however - She still hasn't eaten! The temps are 26°-32° and humidity was at 50%. Around ten days ago I thought she might be starting a shed as the top of her head changed to a dull bluish colour and her pattern dulled in colour too, I upped the humidity slightly with the use of a damp moss hide but still no shed & I've continued to offer a small mouse once a week but she shows no interest at all. Her weight hasn't changed but she has grown a full ten centimeters since I got her. She's around nine months old(so I've been told)& 57 cm, 272 Grams. Should I try & offer something larger like a rat pup? Do her weight & size sound about right for her age?as the title says,am I worrying about nothing & just try to be a little more patient? LOL

temp's ect sound fine, if she went blue an has cleared up then she may shed soon.
leave her completley alone for a week only going in the viv to spot clean/change water then offer her another rat/mouse, you want to feed something that's 10-15% of her body weight something the same size as her thickest part work's out around the same |

Few questions. What size is the vivarium? Is it well packed out with stuff? What type of bulb are you using? |

Thanks for the quick replies, she's in an Exo Terra breeding box, 37x22x15 cm with a heat mat. Inside she just has beach chip substrate, water bowl & her hide. |

Ok thanks, ideally they need 2 hides, one in the hot end, one in the cold end, the hot end should be 31-33 degrees and well the cold end will just be room temperature as its a heat mat. Hides don't need to be bought, a toilet roll tube will do. Stabilise the hot end temperature to avoid it dropping under 30 or going over 35 and once she warms to the correct temperature she will be able to digest and will be willing to eat. Are you using a digital thermometer and thermostat? Oh another trick is throw a towel over half of the tub, royals are nocturnal, dark is how they like things. |

Thanks for the advice, I've added a second hide on the cool side of the viv & put a towel over the hot side to keep it a bit darker & help keep it at a steady temp. I'm using digital thermometer & stat. I'll leave her be for a week as recommended by Chrisc & then offer her a small rat, The mice I have offered were to small going by the 10/15% rule. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again. |

Setup Sounds good its the waiting game now, minimal interaction while he settles. Don't worry about food being too small in the short term, getting them eating is the priority and they are more likely to take something a little on the small side in my experience. You can then increase the size to something a bit more suitable for their requirements. This is all part of the fun of settling in a Royal Python, they can be a bit stressy but once they do settle they are grand. It took me a month to settle my Royal but then he ate everything put in front of him for the next year, he fasts for about 4-6 months over the winter but he is not even 3 years old and 1.7kg. A very big boy, so don't worry, this is what they do and it does them no harm. |

I've kept her quiet for the last six days with a half covered viv & a steady temp of 32.5°. Tonight I decided to try & give her feed. I warmed an adult mouse on the rad & also a towel, laid the warm towel on the table first and then put Apsalar on it. I offered the mouse but no interest to start with. Then she came over to give it a sniff & wham! One happy Royal & one happy owner! Thanks for the advice guys. |
