hi there, not been on here for a while, life ya know, well anyway we are having a massive mite problem, We purchased a subadult salmon boa a few weeks back, and silly me didn't put him into a different room from matilda for a few weeks so we now have a huge amount of mites over both snakes, im totally gutted as it took ages to get rid of them when matilda had them, ive just covered them both in invermectin and fogged their vivs but I wondered if anyone had tried ther hypoaspis mite before as I think im gonna get some to see if it will help get rid of any remaining little buggers?? anyone?? |

No never tried that, don't really like the thought of fighting mite with mite, I just soaked my snakes in some water with olive oil in for 10-15 mins this pretty much drowns all the mites however does not kill any eggs that may be laid in your viv. whilst soaking strip out the viv or rub, I sprayed onto blue roll my front line spray wipe down the whole viv every nook and cranny. Then just use kitchen towel as substrate. Once you get the snake out dry off and wipe, down with some cotton wool pads with the front line or what ever you use. Leave the snake out for a short while to dry off, then place back in viv, repeat this whole process in a couple of weeks. Should be mite free :) |

Aww the little monsters. If you've used any mite killing chemicals on the snake or vivarium then hypoapsis mites will just die too.
Was it a specialist reptile vet that gave you Invermectin? And how are you administering it as It's a very toxic substance. There are far safer treatments available.
Richard's technique above is pretty much the best thing to do to quickly and safely kill off mites.
I'd personally throw out anything I couldn't boil, I also steam clean my vivariums during deep cleans so I'd also do this before treating the whole vivarium including the outside and everything within about a 10 foot radius around it with Callingtons or some other mite killing reptile safe substance. Water will kill mites so a bath is all that's needed to kill any mites on the snake, they should fall off when they die but you may need to tweezer out any ones wedged under scales. Then just keep the vivarium minimalist. Kitchen roll and hides and a small water bowl. Reduce the humidity, mites need humidity and then just keep an eye on stuff, retreat as directed on the product (it varies by product but usually corresponds with a mite life cycle).
God luck getting rid of the mites. Let us know how you get on. |

If I empty out my viv I tend to whack the heat right up as it kills any mites in there. Obviously leaving the snake in a rub for couple days but I also submerge my snake in a tub of water with a lid leaving a small air space n air holes in the lid. This kills off quite a lot on the snake it's self. For No longer than 1 hour. |
