Hi all
I am wondering if anybody could help me, i really need some advice or ideas. My royal python Shirley Valentine passed away yesterday she was only 17 months old, she was in great condition and looked really healthy. She shed about a week ago, she normally had difficulty shedding so i helped her by bathing her in warm water and she managed to get it off. She hadn't eaten for 3 weeks but her tail was thick and she had plenty of meat on her. I went out yesterday morning and when i got back she was on her back, she shared a viv with my older royal Costus who is coming up to 3yrs old. Why would a healthy happy snake just go like that? i dont understand it, she was my baby and i am gutted about this.
So if you feel you could advise in anyway please please plase don't hesitate to contact Many thanks Tara |

There are many reasons and the only way you'll know for sure is to get a Post Mortem done. This is especially necessary as you were co-habitting and if it was something contagious your other snake may need treating. Did you notice anything unusual at all?
Sorry for your loss. |

Sorry to here about your royal...
I was just wondering wot sex they were. I take it shirley was a girl...If you had a male and a female in the same viv and the female became egg bound, it would have some serious health issues and could cause death if she was to young and not heavey enought to cope with the eggs. Its recommended that a female is 3 years old and 1500g+ before breeding.
As Blackecho said a postmortem may be a good idea incase it is none of the above, and is a treatable diesease that may be passed to your other royal... |

There was nothing unusal apart from that she hadn't eaten for 3 weeks, she has been with the male for approx a month but she was living with a 7ft boa before Costus. She was very lively and friday when i tried to feed her again, she wasn't interested and kept darting off as she did. I just can't see what it could Costus is three yrs old and has llved alone for all that time. I dont think she was egg bound as you couldn't feel anything inside her, and she was two young for that. no Shirley never ate inside the viv, always feed outside of vivs. I mentioned her tail because thats how you see if they underweight
i have just called a reptile specialist about the post mortem |

As it has been in with a Boa and then a sudden death, as Daz says, I was thinking IBD. Was there any stargazing noticed? - Staring up or into space? |

so sorry for your loss...you must be devastated and shocked...
the minute you mentioned Boa ibd was the first thing that entered my head...
how long did you have her for?
how long had she been having trouble shedding..? that could have been down to set up and not enough moisture but it might have been a sign that things were not right...
think your clues might start there...and the fact that she was not eating, but its hard to say the eating thing as royals can be tricky..
as she was housed with a boa i would be keeping a very very close eye now on your other royal...
colubrids have been known to contract IBD, but the only way you will know for sure is like BE says through a PM done by a qualified herp vet.
I pray for you it is not, but there are also other things that could have caused it to...

Wolfspirit, i have had her two months, but my friend had had her for 14mths. she had had trouble shedding from day one and the moisture in the viv is adequate as i have a hydrometer and mist it daily, she also bathed in the water bowl. She always strike fed, just the last few weeks she never, but i put that down to the shedding, and as this is not unusual for royals did not worry to much about it. -Taz |

am not worrying i just feel sad for you, and thought the vet had told you or something...
Royals dont normally have problems shedding if they are kept in the right conditions...
but i guess there will always be some who dont...
and i am not saying you did not keep yours right
