| my son has had his royal python since christmas eve as apresent, ive tried to feed the snake the following week, as the shop told me too, it still hasnt,today ive gone through 2 fuzzies, but it doesnt want to no,it seems to have lost a lot of weight and gone limp today, really its been about 3 weeks since it last fed, what should i do |

Hi is there any way you can get a pic of your snake up on the site? what age do you think it is? and if you can weigh it that would be useful. By fuzzies do you mean fuzzy mice? is that what it was eating in the shop? how often are you attempting to feed it.? Do you know if it is drinking water ok? Does it skin appear very dull? What are you keeping it in and what are the temperatures at?
Sorry a lot of questions i know but the answers will make it a lot easier for you get be helped. Might also be worth just mentioning were you are from as if there is some one else on the forum near by with more experience they might be willing or able to call to your home to help?. |

sorry can not put picture on for you to see, the snake is a few months old we have only had it for 20 days. the shop was feeding it a couple of fuzzies (mice) per feed.the hot point on the tank is about 85 degrees, its kept in a tank not a vivarium. its not dull or ready to shed, i have not seen it drink however there is water always in the tank.
we have tried 4 mice in the last 2/3 days not showing any interest. the plan is to take it back to the shop if we can not get it to feed. we think it may die if it does not eat son? |

i would take it back if its showing signs of becoming weak so soon  ,as it does not look good as alot of hatchlings dont make it.
EDIT...Do you have 3 sides of the tank covered as this will distress the royal and make it feel vunerable and therefor not eat. |

as lee said. at this stage probably best to bring it back to the shop . but for the next one, hatchlings don't need a lot of space and prefer small enclosures. if using the same tank. cover 3sides with dark card so there is only one viewing pane.Increase the temps. you should be aiming for 90 at the warm side.and 80 cool side. At don't over the food so often, as this can also cause stress. if it refuses to eat then you should leave it 5days and try again. As lee also said a lot of hatchlings don't make it, but if you get him back to the shop they may be able to get him feeding again for you. good luck and let us know what you do. You could try him with a small mouse in 5days time make sure it is nice an warm. (only if you dont get him back to the shop)
what ever happen though don't blame your self. When i first staring keeping royals I got 2 sisters and had them in perfect setups but they both refused to eat and i brought them back to see if the shop could get them eaten. eventually both did but one how ever died shortly after. some times its just not meant to be. i have her sister back and she is doing great the biggest of all my snakes and eating well. |

Hi, welcome to the forum.
Your temps are a little low, you want a hot spot of 90-92F.

If it is a glass tank then as above I would recommend covering 3 sides as the open space can cause stress to a young Royal.
What does your snake weigh?
Just to give you an idea, one of my adults went 3.5 months recently and barely lost a gram and is fine. |

Hi and welcome. As above with returning it to the shop, temperatures and covering tank sides. Only thing to add with the latter- what are the dimensions of the tank? They do not need a lot of space i.e. length of tank + one side of tank = length of the snake (as a rough guide).
Speaking from experience, Royals do tend to freak out a bit in "big" spaces. If your enclosure is too large then perhaps either use a RUB or "divide" or panel off the enclosure i.e. in half, so its of suitable size (do remember to keep a hot and colder spot though).
