Hi all,
I'm new to royals and have just got a year old female, Florence....she is beautiful!

My issue is her heat set up. She came with a habistat dimming thermostat and a heat mat to use at night so that the viv would be in darkness to alow her a natural sense of night, good idea i thought, but, my local reptile shop tells me to get rid of the heat mat as it can cause scale rot and leave habistat on 24/7.

So, how do i give her a dark night time if the stat is keeping her light on all night?

If you are using a red bulb on 24/7 and its got a guard, leave it on 24/7, they can barely see red light, its just like dusk to them, but you will be able to see them at night.

Thanks for that, the bulb isnt red, its a normal reflector type. I will change it then.
How about the heat mat, is it a problem to use it? I was told that thick snakes, pythons, boas etc can get moisture trapped under their bellies and the ground heat can cause rot?
Like i said, im new and full of questions! Glad i found this forum though, been having a read and you guys seem to know your stuff!

if ur going to change the colour of the bulb , you may as well change to a ceramic bulb as they last a lot longer ! and the natural day light that comes throught ur window should be all they need .

I prefer Red bulbs to ceramic as it means I can see them when its dark and I have had no issue with the length of time they last in comparison to ceramics?

Hi there sandi and welcome i put my heat mats on the outside under the viv or rub which ever you are using still on a thermo and a normal red 25 watt from b&q set the matt thermo as you would.
The red bulb is on a timer on at 08.00 of at 18.00 keep us updated.

Well just to throw in my 2p.
I use ceramics and heat mats on all 3 of mine.

Ceramics heat the air to an ambient temp required per snake. The heat mats are set to a gentle 28-30' underneath subdstrate.
All run thermostats and the light is timered. Never had any problems at all.
It's also important to use digital gauges as well to double check the temps

Hiya and welcome! I have sheba on a red bulb (guarded) with stat on it and its on 24/7, no heat mat in there, i love seein her roam at night, inspectin everythin! As welly said its important to use gauges and thermostats to monitor the temps, but as for which way u heat the viv i guess its all personal preference really. :)

Thanks to all of you for your replies.
I've been turning the stat down at night and using the heat mat in an area of the viv that she doesnt sleep in as she always sleeps at the cool end at night and the hot end in the day. Getting to know her likes and dislikes now so we are getting on fine!
I will keep you posted and sort out some pics to show you soon.
