Hi,
I am Brian from Glasgow. I got my first Royal Python yesterday. He is an 08 male and weighs 778g. I also have an Ultramel Anery cornsnake and I have kept reptiles for around 20 years so I am not a total newbie. The tank has a heatmat and thermostat plus digital thermometer and hygrometer.
Here a pic of Bob (or KingBob as my wife calls him) He's a very friendly big guy

He came in a plastic storage tub but I bought a 50 litre RUB today and set it up like this:-

The waterbowl doubles as the hide on the cold side. I have added the tub containing sphagnum moss as he is going to shed soon. Once he has shed this will be removed and I will add another hide to the hot side.
Any thoughts or comments are appreciated. Would he appreciate any plastic plants or additional decor?
Thanks, Brian. |

Hi, welcome to the forum.
They like it packed, so the more you want to put in the merrier
In the wild they live down small rodent burrows, so cramped is good, they feel more secure. |

Ok cheers for the info. I wasn't sure what was needed regarding plants as I suspected he'd spend alot of time in his hides. Looks like a trip to TK Max is in order tomorrow for some plants.
Thanks, Brian, |

Hi and welcome - I thought I'd got a pretty weird forum name but I reckon yours is as bad lol.
King Bob's a beauty - your next royal will have to be Harley (Fat Bob) - hey might use that name myself!
I'm a viv enthusiast myself but I definitely go for the crowded thing - can't get Shahi out unless he's in one of his boxes. TK Maxx sells plants??? Drat, I passed the place today on an enforced shopping trip! Will check it out, thanks for the tip. |

I prefer the term unique usernames lol
Thanks for the welcome. TK Max do a whole range of plants from £3 upwards, most of them come "potted" as such but I just ditch the pots and use the plastic plants. I also noticed today Hobbycraft have a whole range of artifical plants in stock now.
As for the Harley Fat Boy/Bob.....................That's one of my future lottery win purchases |

Kingbob took his first feed from me tonight as he was blue last week when I got him. Apart from nearly crapping myself when he struck it (I wasn't expecting it) it went great. He struck for it 3 times and missed it but seemed pretty close to my hand as I was holding it with tweezers so I decided it wasn't warm enough and he was smelling the rat but sensing heat from my hand. I heated it a bit more took it back and he took it first time. Glad first one's over and I've learned something new :-) |

Congrats - that's great! Sounds like he's settled well with you. Shahi's nowhere near the size of KingBob but it's still an experience when he strikes - must be incredible when they're adult. Like your very own David Attenborough documentary! |

Now I know what to expect I'll enjoy the experience next time. I was totally taken by surprise at the verosity of it having only fed a corn snake before who just scoops the mice up gently! |

Also check out the next video from Snakebyte TV 'Snake bites Chewy again' A very good example of how NOT to handle a royal. What a load of plonkers! |
