Hello everyone! This forum is by FAR the friendliest forum i've come across, everyone seems to get on very well and are very welcoming. I'm 16 and new to snakes, i've wanted one for a few years and originally wanted a corn snake as i was told they were the best for beginners, my uncle has a royal and i instantly fell in love with it, so i finally persuaded my mum to let me get one! On halloween of 2010 i got myself a royal python (im not sure of the sex as of yet, but for now im calling it a he ) I named him Kaa.
He's a year old and I love him to bits! He fed for the first two weeks but hasn't fed for around 7 weeks now, which is worrying for me as i havent had him long... But looking at some of the posts, its pretty common.
I cant say there wont be any silly questions, because theres no doubt there will be, so im sorry in advance aha.

hi and welcome

have you tried the hairdryer trick, i defrost my mice and rats over night in the fridge then put them in the room where my snakes are in the morning. when my viv lights go out at 7 i sit the tub of mice in hot water for a few mins then heat the head using a hairdryer. seems to work for me

No, nothing has really changed in the viv sinse he last ate, and tems are fine, they did drop at one point but they're back up now.
Unfortunately I havent been able to keep track of his weight as I have no scales, but he doesnt look skinny, so hopefully its all okay

i don't know how true this is as never had to do it, not even on a prob feeder i had but i have heard and read that braining is a last resort, i can't remember why as it was a while ago that i saw it

braining is not a last resort, its more of a first resort as all you do is put a small hole in mouses/rats head with a pin, then squeeze it to get a bit of juice out, and the smell is meant to be irestable, although both mine refused it when i tried it, but its a good thing to try

Hi again, I'm pretty sure that Kaa's fast is due to the time of year, but yes, braining can be a good idea. My smallest corn, Cy, came with a history of poor feeding (apparently Miamis can be like this) and she responded to something I've never read about but that they do seem to like. I get a pair of scissors and snip poor mousey at the nape of the neck, fracturing the spine. Eww, gross, I know, but whether it's the spinal fluid or the extra smell of flesh, this often works. Some people puncture the gut as well.

But, as he's a year old royal, at this season his mind's probably on the girls, and he'll eat when he feels like it.

It's why we all start with corns, because then the corns come in handy to mop up the refused royal rodents.

Yeah im hoping its just the time of year, he was feeding fine when i first got him and the reptile shop said he was a good feeder.
I'll try that too if braining the mouse doesnt work :)
Yeah i know, i was originally going to get a corn (my mum preffered the corns as "royals looked huge and agressive"), but when i handled my uncles royal i fell in love with it, and realised if i got a corn i wouldnt be allowed the royal :( so I got Kaa

Huge and aggressive - LOL! ROFL!!!!!

Mind you, I AM looking forward to introducing Surahi, who's all of 4' (AAAAH GASP!! Killer anaconda!) to my ex. I know for sure he'll back across the room, screaming that 'it'll eat you!' (It's all show with him - one of these days I'm going to get him to let a royal snugggle up on his lap lol)

Nah, you weren't wrong at all - possibly whoever gave the advice didn't like the idea of mutilating the prey - it is pretty gross after all. I still apologise to mousey if I have to do it ...

(And in my time I've killed and skinned my own rabbits ...I'm not that squeamish ...)
