A week or so ago, I posted a thread about getting a thermostat for my heat mat, I believe it was BAT who said if we can have electric blankets with automatic cut offs, then why can't they make mats or heaters with them.
Well, I'm not sure if it's a new thing or not in general, but........ ZooMed have brought out a "ReptiTherm Habitat Heater" - Heavy Duty 40 Watt heater, with LED light to tell you when the heater is "on"
- Automatic Thermostat protection shuts off heater at 48C (119D) to prevent over heating
- Water resistant construction
That's not the full list, but as you can see, a built in automatic thermostat! So they are obviously making them, so maybe in the future there will be some coming for more main stream use. The one above is advertised for tortoises, but it probably wouldn't be hard to make one with a lower heat threshold.
I saw it advertised on the back of the April 2011 edition of Practical Reptile.
Heater
It looks like it's about £50 (That's just using Google Shopping though)

It was me indeed ... yes, if humans can have electric blankets with adjustable controls, no risk of thermal blocking and safety cutout, why can't snakes?
That zoomed heater looks pretty good - but I can't make out if the temp can be adjusted. If it could, then that could certainly be the way forward. |

I have seen heat mats with inline thermostat too.
With that one you have described when used with Royals, it is already overheating by 16 degrees before is cuts off. Though it will protect from fire etc so it has its benefits but with nowhere near the control you get from separate stats. |

Aye, I know it would be no good for Royals, but it's a step forward for getting them made more often and having them more common than non statted heaters of any kind. |

I agree, I don't know why they aren't self statted in an adjustable way. I think there must be some reason they don't do it even though I can't think of one. |

if you take the price of a stat, and the price of the mats and add them together is quite a bit of cash, so you buy one and it goes and gets broked , the price of replace outweighs the price to replace a simple stat or mat. Is more cost effective to have the 2 pieces of kit rather than the single unit.
I would assume that the mat and stat combo requires the same equipment to work as already inbuilt into them so dont see any price savings on these items together. |
