Duke is looking a bit dull today, he isn't blue yet but he is heading that way for sure.
He was out for a handling session and I noticed he felt kinda crispy and a few scales on his belly seemed a bit knackered, he 100% doesn't have any illness that can present itself with crispy bellies so I can only assume its shed related.
I have thrown a damp face towel on his hot side hide and raised his humidity a bit to 70% (though it will climb a bit higher before balancing out), the substrate is still bone dry so not worried about scale rot and his humidity is normally around the 50% mark so the extra short lived humidity won't do him any harm in the RI department.
This is my first Royal shed so I'm a little bit nervous, made even worse because I'm having to leave my snakes for few days to fend for themselves even thoguh I know they'll be fine it doesn't help. Just want to make sure I've everything covered. So have I missed anything? |

Hi, I've noticed sometimes that Saffron's belly scales can feel a bit 'flaky' before a shed, but sometimes I've thought a snake looked 'dull' and was going into shed, and it hasn't ...Does his skin look 'dusty' as if he's been very finely powdered?
I'm certain he'll be okay by himself for a few days, and Spot too. One other thing you could do to raise humidity is to give him a big water bowl on his hot side. I do this for Shahi permanently, as he used to be a terrible 'shredder' and he sheds beautifully now.

Yeah I know they'll do grand, they'll not notice I've gone.
I just have the sneaking suspicion that Duke will be a bad shedder, mainly because I'm not sure how he is going to get his fat backside through the thinner neck bit lol. But fingers crossed he'll prove me wrong, I'm only away a few days so no way will he shed while I'm away and I've done everything I can to have his humidity right and it can hold itself without any intervention for about a week normally so I shouldn't worry. I would have put them into the rep shop but I'll be back before they have time to settle in and just be unsettled unnecessarily. |

Bob, Duke & Kate will be going through their sheds together... First shed of any snake for us, so we're very apprehensive! Kate was Blue (you might remember the picture) on Saturday and we've been waiting ever since! Every morning, we've been expecting to find a skin and a poo but nothing!
I've just been watching her for the last 10 mins and she's out and about. Not blue any more so hopefully won't be long. The flannel trick you and others suggested has helped the humidity, currently around 70%. Fingers crossed for Duke & Kate!

Duke will be a while yet, at least a week I'd say though I'm already climbing the walls with excitement and anticipation. If Kate has cleared up again after the blue phase then you should get something quite soon. If your anything like me you end up staying up an hour or so over the time your supposed to go to bed and wake up at the crack of dawn to check.
With a flannel in mine hits 70%ish too which is pretty much spot on for Royals in shed. I hope you get the skin and poo separate or the show and tell may clear your lads classroom. |

LOL! I'm sure the Healty & Safety Rep at the school would line the school up in the playground and hose them all down with disinfectant afterwards.
Know what you mean about waiting up - enjoyed watching her last night in the hope she'd start climbing out of her old skin that she has no use for anymore. One of the wonders of nature isn't it?
Unfortunately, no news this morning, so we sit and wait.

Hi, Steve, good luck with Kate's shed, and Bob, I'd forgotten it will be Duke's first shed with you too.
One thing with royals is, they're so damn secretive! Corns come right out and undulate out of their 'body stocking' with gusto; royals tend to hide in a corner like a modest lady behind a curtain in a changing room; all you see is the odd flicker of movement, although one night I swear Shahi waited for me to arrive before he started his shed; it was an education, even though it was all in bits!
Looks like my Surahi's going to be shedding at the same time as Duke; I thought she looked dusty yesterday, and today her eyes are going blue, skin looks even dustier and her belly scales are palest pink - the first time I've seen that. However, unlike Duke, I'm afraid there is a bit of a problem with Surahi; rather than hijack this thread she's going to have her own over on the health section.
Good luck to us all - Steve I do hope your kids manage to see Kate shed, and you too, of course, and Bob with Duke too. |
