I'm going to try to feed Dio on Sunday if he's not shedding and having never tried to feed a snake before are there any good tips you could give me to get him to take it? Whats the best way of heating it up?

My boyfriend tried last Friday but he didn't take it. He's new to royals too so wasn't quite sure what to do. His old garter snake used to get fed live goldfish from the local pet shop so he's not used to the frozen food.

What we do is leave the mice/rats out over night
If he don't take it at room temp try putting in a sandwich bag
And put hot water in a cup and warm it up

Don't handle him 2 hours before your going to feed
If you feed him in the viv/rub put a bit of kitchen roll down as to avoid substrate
A little won't hurt

If and when he strikes give the mice/rat a wiggle
Keep an eye on him and if he looks like his going to let go give it another little wiggle

How long have you had the royal

Good luck and happy feeding

We will have had him 2 weeks Saturday (tomorrow). The guy in the shop said he fed on the Wednesday before we picked him up.

As its your first time you have to be prepared for two things, The strong feeding response, in that case make sure the rat is between your hand and the snake, when they get the scent of food any movement becomes a target, make sure the thing moving is the rat. Then theres the lazy leave it over there I'll get to it type of feeder (AKA Duke) then you just leave it, they will come out and have a munch when it goes dark and quiet.

Don't worry if he don't feed he may need more time to settle in

My female pastel we got her Sunday and we offered a rat to her on the Wednesday and took it no problems

Now our pinstripe took four weeks before he would take a little mouse

All royals are different

As i say don't won't if he don't feed this week

How much does he weigh and is he a cb10?

The leaving it was what my OH tried the first time. I'm hoping he was just not settled yet and he hasn't been handled since Sunday (mostly as he won't come out his log). He's only on mouse fluffs at the moment but want to get him onto rats asap, though i have said definately no hooded rats are being fed to him especially black and mouse brown coloured ones.

Is it worth using some of my rats bedding to rub the mouse in to get him used to rat smell now?

Kitchen tongs from Wilkinsons, £2 - they won't be warmer than the prey so Dio won't go for your hand by mistake.

Has his supplier told you how he likes to feed? If you know what he's used to, it's a good idea to stick to that.

Good luck!

Yeah he's cb10. He's about 6 months old and 200g so he's a good weight.

I'll get the boyfriend to phone them and ask as he saved their number.

I know it's wrong but so tempting to rub the defrosted mouse on Asti. Don't think she'd appreciate it very much.

I'll try him on a normal mouse this time and if he takes it i'll try a rat smelling one next time.

Ha! Once you've got him feeding well, you could always start scenting the mouse with some of Asti's used bedding to make it smell slowly rattier, and then...craftily change to a real rat!

That's what i was hoping to do. It's quite handy having such a ready supply of rat smell. Shame it won't be as smelly as when there were 2 of them but it should be enough.

If anyone in the southampton area wants any used rat bedding to sent with their more than welcome to it.

Well it looks like i may not have to worry about feeding Dio on sunday as the boyfriend seems to have decided to feed him today while i'm still away at my parents. Trying to get him to wait till tomorrow so i can be there.

Dio's mouse has been put in his viv so now it's just wait and see if he eats it.

I've told the boyfriend to wave it infront of him to get him to notice it. Still annoyed he couldn't wait until tomorrow when i'm there but there will be plenty more feed in the future.

He could have waited but purely because he didn't Dio will refuse the mouse. I find waving the food infront of Duke the best way to make him refuse it. I have to put the rat in his metal feeding dish, turn off the lights and TV and then sit as far away as possible. Usually takes about 20-30 minutes before Duke appears but if you watch carefully about a minute after that rat goes in his nose is at the entrance of the hide. Dio will know for sure its there and is probably waiting for the coast to be clear.
