I am definitely getting a royal hatchling later in the year. but wanted to start getting the equipment bought to spread out the cost.

I have a faunarium which is 18" x 12" which i beleive is suitable to start with, and a heat mat. Aspen shavings ect.

I figured i would need to buy

a stat
2 x themometers
2 x hides
water bowl
a humididity gauge

is there anything else i will need???

also what size prey item do they generally start on (i know i can get this info off the breeder/shop but was just after an idea.... I know they can be picky eaters, so have been reading up on ways to encourage them to eat, luckily i have a gerbil and a hamster i could use their dirty bedding to scent frozen prey..

cheers

Very exciting getting a royal. We have 4 and on the hunt for 2 more to complete our collection. They are very addictive and have great personalities!

Ok I believe that fauns rant suitable for royals as they have all the ventilation at the top which dosnt keep humidity right ( believe I've read that on here, so don't quote me lol ) we use a 21l really useful box (RUB) for ours with holes in. They are sitting on a heat mat at 32 deg which is running on a pulse stat as we find they keep temps slightly better and do t have a drop like the mat stats.

As for prey size all depends of how old they are and thier size. Our females both come to us at 300g + and are on rat weaners. A smaller pastel was on medium mice but we have converted him to fuzzy rats. And our smallest has only had one feed of a small mouse so far. It gets a little worrying when they don't eat but there is always plenty of support here of from your breeder if you get a good one

Think you have just about everything covered yourself though

Yes, as MrsA82 says, a faun isn't suitable for a royal, and apart from the ventilation problem, it's too exposed. Even with a rub, I'd personally drape a towel over the top to make it dimmer.

Rubs are fine but in colder weather need to be in a warm room and are prone to humidity problems no matter how well ventilated (and if too well ventilated, like a faun, don't keep in the heat.)

My personal choice is a vivarium with ceramic or infra red heat, guarded and statted of course, but that is just my personal choice - I live in a coldish house where most doors have to be kept open by order of cats lol. A mat in a viv is not suitable for a royal; if the heavy bodied royal basks on it, even a statted mat may overheat and burn the royal owing to thermal blocking, and for the same reason cannot be put under a viv. Mats under rubs are fine.

Your list of equipment is fine too, but I'd include a few fake plants - royals love dimness, cover, cluttered surroundings.

If these are any use, can recommend the following online shops:

Blue Lizard
Swell Reptiles
Surrey Pet Supplies.

They're gorgeous snakes - hope you get your royal soon.

Thanks i will look into the RUB's it'll only be until he/she is a little biger then i will buy a viv. shame about the faunarium as I have one sitting there screaming out to be filled with a snake.. then again it does come in handy for popping the corn snake into when i clean the viv out... will start buying a few bits. is there a thread on here about how to convert a RUB???
