Good morning.
I have enjoyed this forum for a while, and before embarking on having a Royal!
Experience to date has been limited to a year with a Brazilian Rainbow Boa; promising myself to go no further until I was sure I was hooked - well I was!
So have now had Nefertari for about a month and she's beautiful.
Eating a bit problematic, though with all the advice from the forum members, I'm not overly concerned yet (my Boa had a tricky time too for a month or so but they seem to work through it, don't they?)
Most pleasing is that I could see a 'shed' coming and she completed it within 3 hours today and all in one piece too - which I think is excellent. i am assuming that if she is like Ramases (the Boa) she may consider food within a few days - last food was 8th June?

I must take the opportunity of saying a very big Thank You to all the members who post regularly and help we 'juniors' out (junior in experience not in age). It makes the whole thing so much more enjoyable.

Hi and welcome - glad you like the forum - there is so much info on here, and we're all learning; that is the beauty of owning royals and all snakes - there is always something new and nobody can ever say they know it all.

Congrats on Nefertari - love the name, it really suits a royal.

Thanks LB.
Like you, I have been hooked on the culture for many years.
My dog is Cleopatra and one of the cats is Ra.
The RP is pretty 'spikey' actually which I gather is unusual for RPs; she is incredibly defensive and I rather think I'm going to have my work cut out to bring her around...but I will. Funny thing is I actually like them with some natural spirit as if they were in the wild.

LOL - you'd love my Ziska then! I recommend a gopher snake as your next purchase. They really are a walk on the wild side.

Small ones can be defensive and she does look quite young, she will come round with regular short handling sessions. Duke is more shy than defensive and its taken about 6 months to have him calm around me, he has struck a few times but all bluff he's never made contact. Keep up the good work.

Sorry Tawfik, I am an absolute beginner so have no idea of genetics on these. I agree there are similarities; perhaps you can discover the background?

They're both what's known as 'normal' or 'wildtype' royals - BUT, as there is so much variation in this wild type, and as indeed some variations, or morphs, have been used in breeding programmes to create new morphs that will breed true, there is really no such thing as a 'normal' normal! My Shahi, who also resembles Blitz, was sold as a cf (Captive farmed ie hatched from eggs taken from wild royal burrows in West Africa and exported to the UK) 'high gold' normal. A pretty way of saying he's just a bit more yellowy coloured lol.

On nearly every 'normal' you'll see some fascinating variation, such as 'reduced pattern' or lack of spotting in the golden blotches on the snake's sides (to confuse the issue there is a 'reduced pattern' morph) or extra white on the sides etc. They're still 'normal', but all beautiful.

Gorgeous pics of Nefetari, by the way - do envy people with photographic skills.

Thanks so much BTS; excellent information - I must say that as a novice I thought of her as standard colouration and it's good to know. I must say that I do love her 'yellowness' in the pattern; she is very beautiful if a little 'strike-happy' but it doesn't bother me; she'll come around I'm sure, especially after a huge mouse she ate today ...Wow, what a strike!
I know cats well, being a breeder so will transfer my knowledge to the RPs. I can see that the pattern is unlikely to replicate precisely - maybe that's what makes them so fascinating.

You breed cats? What kind? I used to breed Siamese in the 1980s but retired (and so did they) when I got to 10 cats in the household lol.

Thank u BATS for the explanation and the information.
I agree with Mark, i really do love the yellowness in Blitz, i think it makes him special normal.

BATS,
do you still have cats?
We have bred Burmillas/Asians for nearly 20 years now. Just a couple of litters a year but so beautiful.
Have a look at Cats101 on Animal Planet on Sundays (7.00pm) - the Asians are due later this year - it's our cats they used - two days filming last week.
However this is an RP forum so will go no further on that.
Was the cat info useful to you when you had your snakes?
I am not thinking of breeding RPs but it's fascinating to see the genetic similarities.
I have to say Tawfik that before joining the forum I assumed all RPs were this high density yellow; - which is why it's good to share knowledge to learn.
